Every summer, kids throughout North America head for summer camp. For most, it’s an idyllic, exciting time to make new friends and stretch their wings away from parents.
For children battling the devastating effects of cancer, a simple summer camp seems out of reach without the treatments and specialized care at the center of their young lives.
That’s where KOA Care Camps — and you — come in.
For more than 30 years, Kampgrounds of America and its 485 campground owners throughout North America have raised funds to support KOA Care Camps for children with cancer. These 52 specialized camps provide a true summer camp experience for thousands of young kids and their siblings, allowing them to bond with children in similar circumstances, while continuing their lifesaving treatments.
Funds for the camps come from campers just like you. Each May, KOA kicks off the summer season with The Big Weekend — a celebration that gives our guests a free night of camping. It’s also the primary fundraising weekend for KOA Care Camps.
Right now, at those 52 Care Camps around North America, children battling cancer are enjoying the camp experience that your donations help support. Funding totaling more than $500,000 in 2013 was distributed to the camps to help offset the more than $1,000+cost for each child.
But we need to do more. Many other traditional sources of funding for these camps have been discontinued, and that makes the dollars collected from KOA campers that much more vital to these deserving kids.
So now, it’s up to campers like you to ensure these very special children are able to make a KOA Care Camp part of their cure. Each KOA Campground has a special donation collection box available to receive your donations.
