Every fall, the woods of Carver, Massachusetts, transform into a magical kingdom for King Richard’s Faire. With towering trees adorned in early autumn colors and the sounds of medieval merriment echoing through the forest, this Renaissance festival, one of the largest in New England, invites visitors to step back in time and experience a fantastical world of knights, kings, and jesters. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning fan, King Richard’s Faire offers a captivating escape for all.
King Richard’s Faire has been enchanting guests for over 40 years. Since its inception in 1982, the event has grown into an annual tradition for families and fantasy enthusiasts alike. Inspired by medieval England, the festival grounds are designed to look like a 16th-century village, complete with shops, food stands, and stages where live performances unfold throughout the day.
When you step through the gates of King Richard’s Faire, you're greeted by the sight of elaborately costumed characters, from jesters to court ladies, roaming the grounds. You might even catch a glimpse of King Richard himself! The Faire is a unique blend of historical reenactment and theatrical fantasy, where performers stay in character, helping to immerse guests in the medieval atmosphere.
Entertainment: The heart of King Richard’s Faire is its live entertainment. Throughout the day, the event hosts a wide range of performances, from sword fights and jousting tournaments to acrobats and comedy acts. The jousting tournament, where armored knights on horseback charge at one another with lances, is a must-see for anyone attending. There's also a royal court where King Richard and Queen Anne preside over festive ceremonies.
Live Music and Shows: Musical performances fill the air with the sounds of lutes, drums, and bagpipes, creating a lively backdrop to the festivities. Actors put on comedic skits, magic shows, and daring stunts. For something more interactive, guests can participate in archery contests, ax-throwing competitions, or try their hand at traditional crafts.
One of the Faire’s main attractions is its marketplace, a treasure trove of handmade goods. Here, artisans from across the country sell their crafts, including pottery, jewelry, leatherwork, and clothing. Whether you're looking for a piece of medieval armor, a hand-carved wooden sword, or an ornate headdress, the marketplace offers something for everyone.
Many visitors love to dress up in period-appropriate garb, and the marketplace offers plenty of opportunities to find the perfect Renaissance costume to blend into the crowd. Dressing up isn’t required, but it certainly adds to the fun of the experience!
No Renaissance festival is complete without a royal feast, and King Richard’s Faire delivers. The food stalls throughout the village offer a variety of hearty meals and sweet treats. Giant turkey legs are a fan favorite, providing the perfect medieval snack to munch on while wandering the grounds. Other offerings include soup in bread bowls, steak on a stake, and an array of desserts like fudge, cakes, and pastries. Of course, there's plenty of mead, beer, and wine to go around for those of age.
While King Richard’s Faire is a hit with adult visitors, it’s also a fantastic destination for families. Kids will love the interactive performances, games, and even the animals. The festival is home to an exotic zoo, where guests can marvel at big cats like lions and tigers, adding a touch of wildness to the medieval experience.
King Richard’s Faire runs on weekends and certain holidays from early September through late October. In 2024, the festival runs from September 2 to October 22, giving visitors ample time to plan their visit.
Ticket prices vary, with discounts available for children and seniors. It's a good idea to purchase tickets in advance online, as some weekends can sell out quickly.
Whether you’re a history buff, a fan of fantasy, or simply looking for a fun day out with friends and family, King Richard’s Faire offers an unforgettable journey back in time. With its immersive performances, artisan marketplace, and festive atmosphere, it’s no wonder this Renaissance fair has become a beloved New England tradition.
