Crystal River KOA Spotlight: Monkey Island

Crystal River KOA Spotlight: Monkey Island

Just 20 minutes south of our campground you can reach Homosassa Florida. They offer their own tours exploring the Homosassa River giving you the opportunity to experience the beauty nature provides and to spot some manatees as well. However, there is also the opportunity to take a tour on their river and stop by Monkey Island!

This island did not always exist. It was originally a small rock outcropping right in the middle of the river that boats kept hitting. Local and popular developer G.A. "Furgy" Furgason, who was working on a new project at the time now known as the Homosassa Wildlife State Park, told his crew to cover the rock outcropping with some dirt to make it more visible and prevent any further accidents. The crew got a little over-zealous and turned this small group of rocks into a very noticeable small island. Always optimistic Furgy turned this unattractive pile of dirt now in the middle of the river into less of an eye sore with a small light house and some trees before going back to finishing the work at the new wildlife state park. He planned for the park to feature local plants and wildlife, including a group of retired research monkeys.

Unsurprisingly, these monkeys turned out to be escape artists that would cause havoc to the local area and the park. Fed up with their monkey business Furgy started to wish he could send them to a monkey "Alcatraz". He then remembered the small island his crew accidentally created, and an idea came to light.  After few minor adjustments Monkey Island came to life.

Over the years, monkeys came and went from the Monkey Island. Today you can see five well cared for spider-monkeys living on the island. They are fed twice a day with a special diet made for them, provided with enrichment features regularly and new houses for them to live in when they are not out playing. The monkeys also love when boats come out to visit them.

There are several boat charters in Homosassa that offer you tours to stop by and visit monkey island from the water. Book your tour and come stay with us at Crystal River KOA. Don't forget to check out the wonderful Homosassa Wildlife State Park as well!
