Starting July 1st, the local waters open up for scallop season!
From Alligator Pass (the daybeacon #4 near the mouth of the Suwannee River in Levy County) to the Hernando-Pasco County Line enjoy a day out with friends and family as you search the shallow spring waters. Peak scallop season is late July to early August when waters are clear and the scallops are abundant. If you prefer a calmer experience come in September towards the end of the season when crowds thin but the scallops are larger.
Tips for a successful scallop season:
- If you plan on using a charter, book sooner than later as spots fill fast especially for the start of the season. (You do NOT need a saltwater fishing license on licensed charter boats)
- Keep an eye on the weather and tides. You want to go when the tide is low and the weather is calm and sunny, making it easier to spot scallops along the grass beds. Charters will generally take you out during low tide!
- Be respectful to nature! Please do not discard shucked shells back into the shallow waters. This damages the sea grass and can risk injury for fellow scallopers and local wildlife.
You and your friends are able to collect either 2 gallons of in shell scallops or 1 Pint of shucked scallops. There is a ten-gallon in shell limit per vessel with a 1/2-gallon shucked limit. Please note that vessel limit does not allow individuals to exceed their personal limit.
