Do you travel with binoculars in the cup holder? Do you have a life list? Do you shift travel plans to align with migrations? Is bird seed part of your monthly budget?
Well, you’re in luck! Las Cruces has plenty of birding opportunities, many within minutes of the campground. Las Cruces is located in the southernmost US portion of the Central Flyway. The Central Flyway follows one of the Southwest’s most important natural corridors: the Rio Grande Valley. In a region where water is limited, the river creates a long, rich habitat that more than 400 migratory bird species rely on as they travel between the northern U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Central America.
Las Cruces is located in the Mesilla Valley, which encompasses a 100-mile stretch of the Rio Grande basin, from Hatch, NM, through Las Cruces and ending in El Paso, Texas.
Fall through spring is one of the best times to go birding in southern New Mexico and Las Cruces, as these seasons align with the migratory patterns of birds traveling along the Central Flyway.
July–September: Hummingbird migration
September–October: Peak songbird migration
October–December: Waterfowl migration, including the famous sandhill cranes and snow geese
February–March: Waterfowl begin heading back north
April–May: Raptors, songbirds, and hummingbirds migrate north

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is one of New Mexico’s most famous birding destinations, and it’s located just two hours north of Las Cruces KOA off I-25 near Socorro.
Every winter, people flock to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge from all over the world to see sandhill cranes, snow geese, ducks, and other migratory birds gather in the wetlands. The most impressive spectacle, and the one that photographers are after, is the morning fly-out, when all the birds lift from the wetlands at once to forage.
One of the biggest birding events in New Mexico is the annual Festival of the Cranes, held at Bosque del Apache. The 37th Annual Festival of the Cranes takes place December 2–5, 2026, and celebrates the return of cranes and other wintering birds.
If you are heading north for the festival, Las Cruces KOA Holiday makes a great stop along the way. Stay a night or two, enjoy the Organ Mountain views, visit a nearby birding spot, then continue north toward Socorro.
While the Mesilla Valley doesn’t see the volume of migratory waterfowl that Bosque del Apache does, Las Cruces is still within the key migratory routes along the Rio Grande, which means there are plenty of local birding opportunities within minutes of Las Cruces KOA.

Approximate drive from Las Cruces KOA: 10–15 minutes
This is one of the easiest birding outings from the campground. Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park sits along the Rio Grande near historic Mesilla and offers a mix of bosque, wetlands, desert, and river habitat.
It is a good choice if you want a simple morning walk without a long drive. Bring binoculars, take your time, and move slowly through the trails and viewing areas. This is also an easy outing to pair with lunch or shopping in Old Mesilla.
Approximate drive from Las Cruces KOA: 30–35 minutes
Dripping Springs Natural Area gives you a completely different kind of birding day.
Instead of river habitat, you are heading toward the Organ Mountains for desert scrub, canyon scenery, foothills, historic ruins, and wide-open views. The trails are popular for hiking, but birders will appreciate the change in habitat.

Approximate drive from Las Cruces KOA: 25–35 minutes
Leasburg Dam State Park is north of Las Cruces along the Rio Grande. It offers trails, river access, desert scenery, and birding opportunities in a peaceful setting.
This is a good half-day outing, especially in the cooler months. It also works well if you are slowly making your way north through New Mexico and want another birding stop before continuing toward Bosque del Apache.
eBird
The pond at the entrance of our campground has been listed as a birding location on ebird! Our guests must have added this to the map. For recent sitings, visit eBird’s New Mexico map and zoom in on Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.
