On Two Wheels: Mt. Shasta's Best Bike Trails

  • Mt. Shasta Ski Park (Mountain Bike Park): During the summer, the ski lifts take you and your bike to the top for miles of professionally maintained downhill trails. It features everything from beginner "flow" trails to expert technical jumps and drops.
  • Lake Siskiyou Trail: An easy, flat 7-mile loop that circles the lake. It is the most popular trail for families and casual riders, offering incredible mountain views and plenty of spots to stop for a dip in the water.
  • The Gateway Trail System: Located right at the edge of town, this network offers over 10 miles of fast, flowing "singletrack" through the forest. It’s a local favorite for a quick morning ride or an after-work loop.
  • Sacramento River Rail Trail: Located just south in Dunsmuir, this paved and packed-gravel trail follows the winding river. It’s mostly flat and perfect for those who want a long, scenic ride without heavy climbing.
  • The Sisson-Callahan National Recreation Trail: A rugged and epic 12-mile descent for advanced riders. It starts high on the mountain and drops thousands of feet through diverse terrain—not for the faint of heart!
  • Bear Springs Trail: A lesser-traveled route that offers a more solitary experience through thick pine forests and wildflower meadows. It’s a great spot to escape the crowds on busy weekends.
  • Abney Meadows: A beautiful high-altitude ride that connects several forest service roads. It offers some of the most unique "backside" views of Mt. Shasta that most tourists never see.
  • McCloud River Railroad Trail: A relatively flat, multi-use trail that follows the old rail grade between Mt. Shasta and McCloud. It’s a great "out-and-back" for riders who enjoy historical sites and river views.
  • Everitt Memorial Highway (Road Cycling): For the "roadies," this is the ultimate challenge. It’s a paved climb from town all the way up to Bunny Flat (7,000 ft). The descent is legendary, but watch your brakes!
  • The Fifth Season: Stop by this local shop in downtown Mt. Shasta for up-to-the-minute trail conditions, bike rentals, and expert repairs if you need a tune-up before hitting the dirt.
