Bear Safety at Camp

Bear Safety at Camp

Camping near Yellowstone National Park is an unforgettable experience—majestic views, starry skies, and wildlife all around. But with that beauty comes responsibility, especially when it comes to sharing the land with bears. At Yellowstone Park / Mountainside KOA Journey, we want every guest to have a safe and enjoyable visit. Here’s what you need to know about staying bear aware during your stay.

You're in Bear Country

Yellowstone is home to both black bears and grizzly bears, and sightings are not uncommon—especially in the spring, summer, and fall. While it’s exciting to know these incredible animals are nearby, it’s crucial to be respectful and cautious to protect both yourself and the bears.

Keep Food and Scents Secure

Bears have an incredible sense of smell and can be drawn to even the faintest scent. To avoid attracting them, always store food, garbage, coolers, toiletries, and anything with a strong smell in bear-proof containers or a locked vehicle. Never keep food or scented items in your tent or cabin.

Maintain a Clean Campsite

A clean campsite is a safe campsite. Be sure to wash dishes promptly, clean up spills, and dispose of trash in designated dumpster. Avoid leaving pet food or snacks unattended—even for a short time.

Stay Alert and Be Prepared

Bears are most active during dawn and dusk, so keep a watchful eye during these times. When hiking or walking around camp, make noise to avoid surprising a bear. Traveling in groups and staying on designated trails can also reduce the chance of an encounter. Carry bear spray and know how to use it.

What to Do if You Encounter a Bear

If you see a bear, remain calm. Don’t run—instead, back away slowly, speak calmly, and give the bear plenty of space. Never approach a bear or attempt to feed it. Report any bear sightings to campground staff immediately.

Help Keep Wildlife Wild

By following these simple precautions, you’re helping protect Yellowstone’s incredible wildlife and ensuring a safe camping experience for everyone. Thank you for doing your part!
