There’s a certain magic to the words “RV Life.” You scroll through social media and picture pristine lake views out the windshield, perfectly brewed coffee by a roaring morning fire, and absolute, unbothered freedom.
And look, a lot of the time, it exactly that. But if you’ve been doing this for more than a single weekend, you know there’s another, slightly messier side to the coin. It’s a lifestyle of beautiful chaos, and whether you drive a 40-foot Class A motorhome, pull a fifth wheel, or rock a vintage pop-up, we all share the same hilarious struggles.
Let’s be honest. We need to talk about the ultimate test of any relationship: backing into a campsite.
It is a universally acknowledged truth that the moment you put the rig in reverse, your spotter will immediately invent a brand-new dialect of hand signals. Is that aggressive waving a ...or a ...? Why does it look exactly like ...?
Meanwhile, every other camper in a three-site radius is suddenly sipping their drink, pretending not to watch the show. We’ve all been the driver, we’ve all been the frantic spotter, and we’ve all been the spectator. It's a rite of passage.
Once the engine is finally off and you're reasonably centered on the pad, the setup dance begins. This is where you experience the great leveling block debate, the delicate art of unhitching without dropping things on your foot, and the sudden, heart-stopping realization that you brought 14 cans of baked beans but forgot the can opener.
There's always one thing that goes slightly sideways. Maybe the slide-out groans a little too loudly, or you spend ten minutes looking for the sewer hose adapter that is somehow exactly where you left it. It’s part of the charm. If everything went perfectly, what would we complain about around the campfire later?
So, with all the backing-up stress and the setup quirks, why do we do it?
Because of what happens next. By 6:00 PM, the struggles of the afternoon are gone, the awning is out, and the campground has transformed into a neighborhood.
There is no community quite like a campground. It doesn't matter if you're a full-timer who has seen the whole country, a weekend warrior escaping the 9-to-5, or a family renting a travel trailer for the very first time—you're instantly part of the club. My wife Starr and the kids will be the first to tell you: some of our absolute best memories aren't just the physical destinations, but the people we've shared a fire ring and a few toasted marshmallows with along the way. RV life forces you to slow down, disconnect from the screens, and actually talk to your neighbors.
At the end of the day, that sense of community is exactly what we’re all about here at the in Buchanan. We know the realities of the road, and we're here to make the good parts even better.
Whether you need someone to help guide you into your site (we use standard, easy-to-read hand signals, we promise!), want to swap road stories at the camp store, or just need a quiet, beautiful place to unwind and laugh about the day's travels, we’ve got a spot waiting for you.
Pack up the rig, double-check that you packed the can opener, and come see us. Let’s keep the campfire going.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
