April in Slidell: Your Guide to Camping & Spring Festivals

April is arguably the best month to visit. The humidity hasn't quite hit its summer peak, the azaleas are in full bloom, and the Northshore is alive with festival season. Whether you’re staying as a basecamp for New Orleans or to explore the "wild side" of the Pearl River, here is what you need to know for your April trip.

1. Explore the Honey Island Swamp

Just minutes from our campground lies one of the most pristine river swamps in America.

  • This is when the alligators start becoming more active as the water warms up. You’ll also see migratory birds and the iconic "Louisiana Gold"—the blooming wild iris.

  • Book a morning tour to beat the afternoon warmth and get the best lighting for photos under the cypress canopies.

2. The "Spring Mud" Strategy

Louisiana spring rain is no joke. While Slidell KOA offers well-maintained gravel pads to keep you level and dry, the local trails can get "gumbo-thick" after an April shower.

  • Bring a pair of or waterproof hikers.

  • Utilize an outdoor mat at your RV or tent entrance. It’s the difference between a clean rig and a floor full of Northshore silt.

3. Festival Fever: Slidell & New Orleans

April is the heart of festival season. Staying in Slidell allows you to enjoy the quiet of the woods at night while being only 30 minutes from the action.

  • Keep an eye out for the events and local crawfish boils—April is peak crawfish season!

  • If you’re heading across Lake Pontchartrain for the start of our KOA is the perfect quiet retreat to escape the city crowds at the end of the day.

4. Go Fishing! (No License Needed!)

Did you know our Slidell KOA features? If you don’t feel like launching a boat at the nearby Heritage Park or the Rigolets, you can spend a lazy April afternoon right here at the park. It’s a great way for kids to learn the ropes of Louisiana fishing in a safe, controlled environment.

5. Managing the Northshore Humidity

April starts to introduce that famous Louisiana moisture.

  • Ensure your AC filters are clean and consider a small dehumidifier (or DampRid) to keep the interior crisp.

  • Use an elevated site (available here at Slidell KOA!) to ensure airflow underneath your tent, which prevents that morning "damp" feeling.
