Warm-weather RV camping can be a great way to enjoy sunny days, desert views and time outside, especially when you plan ahead for the heat. Keeping your RV cool starts with a few simple habits that reduce heat buildup, support your air conditioner and make your RV Site more comfortable during the hottest parts of the day.
Shade can make a noticeable difference in keeping an RV cool during a sunny camping trip. If shade is available at your site, position your RV to reduce direct afternoon sun on windows and the side of the RV that receives the most heat.
You can also use awnings, reflective window covers, windshield shades and exterior sun screens to help block radiant heat before it enters the RV. Small changes outside often make the inside easier to cool.
Begin cooling your RV before the day reaches its hottest point. Once the interior heats up, your air conditioner has to work harder to bring the temperature back down, so running it earlier can help the space stay more comfortable.
Keep doors closed as much as possible, clean or replace AC filters based on your owner’s manual and avoid blocking interior vents. If your RV has multiple cooling zones, use them thoughtfully so the areas you use most stay comfortable.
Some of the best tips for keeping an RV cool happen inside. Cook outdoors when possible, use LED lights, run fans to improve air movement and close blinds during the hottest part of the day.
Additionally, if your RV refrigerator can safely switch from AC power to propane, as indicated in your owner’s manual, that may help reduce electrical demand while you run your air conditioning. Always follow your RV manufacturer’s guidance before adjusting power sources or appliances.
How to keep your RV cool while camping also depends on timing. Open windows during cooler morning or evening hours if outdoor conditions allow, then close them before the heat builds. Save indoor chores for early morning, and spend warmer afternoons at shaded outdoor areas, campground amenities or other comfortable spaces.
