Little City of Rocks - A hidden gem!

Tucked away just north of Gooding, Idaho, lies one of the state’s most fascinating and underrated natural wonders — the Little City of Rocks. This rugged landscape of towering rock formations, wind-carved spires, and ancient petroglyphs feels like a secret playground for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

A Playground of Stone and Sky

The main appeal here is simple — the rocks. You can wander among them for hours, climbing, exploring, and discovering new shapes and textures with every turn. A main trail winds through the heart of the Little City of Rocks, taking about two hours to complete. Along the way, smaller side trails branch off, leading explorers to even more striking formations hidden just out of sight.

Ancient Art and Wild Companions

Keep an eye out for the area’s ancient petroglyphs, carved into stone walls by Native Americans thousands of years ago. These faint but beautiful markings are a powerful reminder of the long history of people who have walked this land.
If you’re lucky, you might also spot some of the local wildlife — coyotes trotting through the sagebrush, rabbits darting between rocks, or hawks circling above the cliffs.

Plan Your Visit

The Little City of Rocks is a self-supported adventure. Primitive camping is allowed, and it’s perfect for those who crave solitude under the stars. Be sure to bring plenty of water, pack a lunch, and prepare for a full day of exploration.

To get there, look for the BLM sign about 12.5 miles north of Gooding on Highway 46. Park at the roadside pull-off and walk in along the clearly marked, though sometimes muddy, road. The short trek in only adds to the feeling that you’re entering another world.
