The Northeast Region experiences the effects of the Atlantic Ocean along its eastern coast and the Great Lakes to the west. This region has a humid continental climate. The summers here are generally warm to hot and humid. The winters in this region are cold to very cold and certain areas and elevations can have a lot of snow. Some southern parts of the region have a humid subtropical climate with hot and humid summers and mild to cold winters. This region has beautiful changing fall foliage every autumn starting in late September and continuing through October and this would be an especially lovely time to camp and enjoy the colors. This region boasts some very large metropolitan areas and cities as well as some beautiful natural features and the coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Nine of the original thirteen colonies are in this region, so there is a lot of history and important historical sites to visit. The nation's capital, Washington, D.C., is also in the Northeast Region. The northern part of this region shares a border with Canada, specifically the provinces of New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Two of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, are also bordering this region and Niagara Falls is right between them on the Niagara River. In Maine, you will find Acadia National Park, the only national park in the Northeast Region. In New Hampshire, you can visit the White Mountain National Forest and White Mountain area with attractions like the Conway Scenic Railroad, Mount Washington Cog Railway, Story Land amusement park and the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway. Massachusetts is home to Boston and the Freedom Trail route. The smallest state, Rhode Island, is also known as "The Ocean State," and has a lot of beaches along the Atlantic shoreline. Vermont is very well-known for the stunning fall foliage and is a popular place for leaf-peepers. You can also visit the Ben and Jerry's Factory Tour and Ice Cream Shop in Vermont. New York is home to the most populated city in the United States, New York City, and the many sights there, including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Central Park, Times Square and the Empire State Building. Upstate New York has a variety of outdoor features, waterfalls, lakes and state parks such as Letchworth, Watkins Glen and Finger Lakes State Parks. Visit New Jersey for many fun boardwalks and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Connecticut has a great historical seaport village area to visit, Mystic Seaport, and the Mystic Aquarium and Institution for Exploration. In Delaware, visit the coastal preserve and old military base Cape Henlopen State Park and Delaware Seashore State Park. You can visit Baltimore and the Inner Harbor in Maryland and the National Aquarium. Pennsylvania also has a lot of sights and attractions, you can visit Philadelphia and the Liberty Bell or Hershey Park family theme park. Also in Pennsylvania, you can visit Presque Isle State Park, a peninsula along the Lake Erie shoreline or Valley Forge National Historical Park or Gettysburg National Military Park.

The best time to visit the Northeast is during the summer months between May-August or early fall. Summer delivers sunny weather perfect for exploring because the days are long and the temperature is warm.
During the autumn months of September and October, the fall foliage is in full transition. This is the best time to visit if you're interested in watching the leafy landscapes transform into beautiful shades of red, yellow, and orange. Fall is also less crowded since summer break is over by September.

As far as more scenic attractions, Vermont is well-know for the fall foliage and New Jersey has the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area. The Northeast has a ton of great attractions to appeal to multiple interests.
The top outdoor activities in the Northeast range from skiing and snowboarding to hiking and horseback riding.
One of the more unique outdoor activities is whale-watching in the Bar Harbor. There are several other opportunities to get out on the water such as kayaking or canoeing on Adirondack Park, Delaware Water Gap, Barnstable Harbor, or Sea Kayak Casco Bay.
If you're a thrill seeker, you could try zip lining at Stowe Mountain Lodge and Arbortrek Canopy Adventures or rocking climbing in the "Gunks."
When winter comes, visitors head to the slopes to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and more. Some of the top resorts in this region are Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont, Bretton Woods Mountain Resort in New Hampshire, and Jay Peak Resort in Vermont.
The Northeast Region is known for having some of America's most iconic attractions. There are several state parks, however there is only one national park in the Northeast Region. This park is Acadia National Park, located in Maine. Acadia is known for its stunning fall foliage, but it is also breathing in the winter, when it is often blanketed in white snow. It's a year-round attraction whether you're interested in visiting for fall foliage, winter skiing, spring fishing, or summer hiking. A few of the park highlights are Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole, Great Long Pond, and Isle au Haut.
The Northeast Region is home to a diversity of environments that are showcase in its state parks. There are numerous opportunities for hiking, biking, paddling, and camping. The cool thing about these parks is that many of them are a short drive from a big city, so you get to experience the great outdoors as well as the city life during your camping trip.
Some of the top state parks in this region are Boston Harbor Islands State Park, Franconia Notch State Park, Niagara Falls State Park, Reid State Park, Point Outlook State Park, Island Beach State Park, Dinosaur State Park and Presque Island State Park.
The Northeast Region has a wide range of food options. Some of the regions favorites are New England-style clam chowder, corned beef, cheesesteaks, lobster roll, and boston cream pie. The cool part about the Northeast is each state has its own most popular food, so if you are unsure where to go you can always look for restaurants with the states iconic foods.
Since this region consists of eleven states, there are so many different, delicious restaurants to experience. Some of the top restaurants in the Northeast are Russ & Daughters, Keens Steakhouse, John's Roast Pork, Peter Luger Steak House, Eventide Oyster Co., O Ya, Neptune Oyster Bar, The Frog & the Peach.
