Visiting Shenandoah National Park

The Shenandoah National Park area is an intriguing place to visit for those interested in the history of this region and the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountain system. Many people choose to camp near Shenandoah National Park to truly experience the natural beauty of all four seasons. Although the scenery and views from the overlooks are impressive year-round, they are most amazing in autumn, when the fall foliage is truly spectacular. Shenandoah National Park is long and narrow and both the 105-mile long Skyline Drive and The Appalachian Trail take visitors through the park. The park has four entrance stations along Skyline Drive, from north to south they are Front Royal, Thornton Gap, Swift Run Gap, and Rockfish Gap. There are two visitor centers, Dickey Ridge is near the northernmost Front Royal Entrance and the Harry F. Byrd Visitor Center is between Thornton Gap and Swift Run Gap around milepost 51.

Numerous hiking opportunities offer a variety of options for different levels of difficulty, distance and starting location. There are hikes featuring waterfalls, scenic overlooks, geologic formations and opportunities to see the wilderness and wildlife.

Shenandoah has several great waterfall hikes accessed from Skyline Drive and the best water flow is in the springtime after snow melt off. Check the hike duration and difficulty to plan the best experience for you. It is a good idea to check for exceptions first, but most hikes are pet-friendly so your dog can also enjoy the trek. Dark Hollow Falls is a great hike if you only have a short amount of time in the park. Whiteoak Canyon Falls, South River Falls Trail, Rose River Falls Loop, Doyles River-Jones Run Loop are several of the popular waterfall hikes in the parks. Other great hikes in Shenandoah National Park are the Old Rag Mountain Hike, the Stony Man Mountain Hike, Mary's Rock Summit Trail and Limberlost Trail.

Another National Landmark site nearby is Grand Caverns, in operation since 1806 and considered to be the oldest operating show cave in the United States.
