Visiting Grand Canyon National Park

The Grand Canyon — this awe-inspiring sight has been captivating visitors since the national park first opened in 1919. This mile-deep gorge is 10 miles wide and spans 277 miles across Northern Arizona. The canyon holds a huge amount of history and information about our earth and contains some of the oldest exposed rock on the planet. However, its dimensions and geological importance are not what draw over 5 million visitors each year, though. Its spectacular beauty can only be truly understood when you see it in all its glory for yourself at Grand Canyon National Park.

There is so much to see and explore when you visit Grand Canyon National Park. To delve into this natural wonder, you may want to enjoy a truly outdoor experience by camping nearby. Whether you prefer the popular attractions along the South Rim or the relative isolation of the North Rim, Grand Canyon camping doesn't get any better than with Kampgrounds of America. There are several KOA Campgrounds nearby that are perfect for avid RVers, cabin enthusiasts and traditional tent campers. Whether you are coming for a weekend or a week, KOA makes a great basecamp for exploring the wonder and inspiring beauty of Grand Canyon National Park.

Experiencing the Grand Canyon

Even the most seasoned adventurers become awestruck at the sight of the Grand Canyon. Carved by the Colorado River over countless years, this natural wonder is known for its massive gorges, panoramic displays, dramatic rock formations and rugged ridges. As you plan your exploration of Grand Canyon National Park, it is exciting to realize that you will be walking the same trails that both Native and European explorers have tread for hundreds of years.

Thanks to the Grand Canyon's status as a national park and its sacred significance to the Native cultures in the region, much of the area remains pristine and untouched. This means that besides the other visitors enjoying the countless vistas and spectacular views, this site is preserved in all its natural glory.

South Rim and North Rim

There is much to do and see when you visit Grand Canyon National Park. Even a simple sightseeing venture is an activity that could take hours. Some visitors do not realize that the Grand Canyon has two main vantage points — the South Rim and the North Rim. The South Rim is by far the most popular destination, as it is considered to be the true Grand Canyon experience. From the South Rim, you can witness nearly two dozen expansive views often seen in popular media. It is also more easily accessible from most major cities and nearby KOA Campgrounds.

While still beautiful in its own right, the North Rim is strikingly different. Because it only has three major vantage points, it is far less busy. The North Rim also closes during the winter months.

Grand Canyon Village and Skywalk

Most visitors begin their Grand Canyon adventure at one of two places — Grand Canyon Village or the Grand Canyon Skywalk. The Village is the most popular entryway into Grand Canyon National Park. It is home to Yavapai Point, one of the best ways to view the Grand Canyon in all its splendor. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the canyon's history, from its Native American roots to the impact of Westernization. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a recent and controversial addition to the park. The large, semi-circular bridge features a transparent floor that provides an unforgettable view of the canyon below. Although the Hualapai Tribe owns it, many feel it detracts from the Grand Canyon's natural beauty.

One of the best ways to get up close and personal with the Grand Canyon is to plan a hiking tour. Many trails take you all the way to the bottom, allowing you to stop and enjoy the scenery or take photographs along the way. Some of the most popular hiking trails include the Rim trails and the Bright Angel Trail on the South Rim. Once you reach the bottom, rafting adventures are available on the famed Colorado River.
