Visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park

If you are planning on camping at Lassen National Park, you'll have plenty of options for RV camping, camping cabin accommodations or tent camping plus all the amenities at the nearby KOA campground. There is a lot to see in this park, including volcanoes, different geothermal features, and unique lakes and hikes, so you will want to plan a few days to visit and explore it all!
This area has experienced volcanic activity for millions of years and visitors can see evidence of the existing hydrothermal areas, with boiling springs and lakes, steam vents and mudpots within the park. There are four types of volcanoes in the world, cinder cone, composite, plug dome, and shield, and all four are found in Lassen Volcanic National Park! The largest hydrothermal area of the park is Bumpass Hell Trail where you can see bubbling pools, steam vents and mudpots. Visit Devil’s Kitchen, a Warner Valley area hiking trail, to see Hot Springs Creek, boiling springs, and hear hissing sounds from the cracks and steam vents coming from the ground. Another short hike from Warner Valley Trailhead is to Boiling Springs Lake, a milky lake that has a temperature of around 125 degrees with mudpots and steam vents around the shore. Sulphur Works is the most easily accessible hydrothermal area in the park, where you can see steam vents and mudpots viewable from a sidewalk.

Experiencing Lassen Volcanic National Park, in Northern California

Lassen offers more than 150 miles of hiking trails for various ability levels. If you're looking for a challenging hike with great views of the park, climb Brokeoff Mountain Trail or to the top of Lassen Peak. For a moderate hike to a waterfall, try the Kings Creek Falls Trail or the Mills Creek Falls Trail. Lassen also offers hikes to a few different lakes, visitors can take an easy hike to Manzanita Lake and even try fishing here. Or visit Butte Lake area and trailhead and nearby Fantastic Lava Beds, Painted Dunes and Cinder Cone. Other lakes to visit include Juniper Lake, a popular place for swimming and Summit Lake, easily accessed from the Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway. Another easy trail is to Devastated Area Interpretive Trail where you can learn about the Lassen Peak eruption in 1915 and the associated activity and aftermath visible today. All visitors should consider that snow and winter weather conditions carry into the summer months so plan accordingly for a visit to this park as many trails and roads will still have some snow on them until June.

Lassen National Park weather is generally mostly winter or summer conditions, spring and fall are usually short transitional seasons here. Winter weather usually lasts from November to May/June in the higher elevations of the park and summer conditions are usually enjoyed from late June to October. You will want to plan the timing of your trip accordingly. The closest KOA campground to Lassen Volcanic National Park, the MT. Lassen/Shingletown KOA Holiday, is open from April through December and has cozy fire rings at your site to enjoy during any time of year and weather condition. You will find numerous amenities and fun activities available throughout your entire stay including recreational fun and themed events.

Nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park, McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, and Lake Shasta are among the numerous opportunities for sightseeing, hiking, stargazing and photography. Spend the day fishing at Hat Creek or just relax around the campground. Swim in our heated pool, play basketball, beach volleyball, tether ball, or swing on the cool tree swing. Don't miss our new birding area. This campground offers spacious RV sites featuring back-in and full-hookup Pull-Though sites up to 65 feet. Our deluxe patio sites include a BBQ grill, patio table and chairs. Deluxe Cabins have a full kitchen and bath, A/C and heat. Linens are provided for the main bed. Camping Cabins offer A/C and heat and are located near the restrooms. Linens or sleeping bags are available for a rental fee at all cabins upon request. Tent sites are available with or without electricity. All sites have fire pits and picnic tables. Even your dog will enjoy our large KampK9 dog area with its obstacle course.
