One of the most fun and authentic coastal activities near Bay Center, Willapa Bay KOA Holiday, is digging for butter clams. These rich, flavorful clams are commonly found in the tidal flats of Willapa Bay and are prized for their hearty texture and delicious taste.
For many campers, clamming becomes a favorite part of their visit—combining fresh coastal air, time on the tide flats, and a fresh seafood meal back at camp.
(Note: A valid Washington State shellfish license is required for clamming.)
Butter clams are a larger clam species found in the sandy and muddy tidal flats of Willapa Bay. They are known for:
• Rich, buttery flavor
• Firm texture
• Great for steaming, chowder, or frying
Butter clams typically live 4–12 inches below the surface, deeper than many other clam species.
The best time to dig butter clams is during low tide, when the tidal flats are exposed. Check local tide charts and plan to arrive about 1–2 hours before the lowest tide.
Look for:
• Small holes or dimples in the sand
• Slight depressions in the mud or gravel
• Areas where the sand looks disturbed
These signs often indicate clams beneath the surface.
You don’t need much equipment to start digging.
Most clammers bring:
• A clam shovel or clam gun
• A bucket or mesh bag
• Rubber boots or waterproof shoes
• A Washington shellfish license
Be sure to refill your holes after digging to keep the flats healthy.
Look for small dimples or holes in the sand or mud.
Dig 8–12 inches deep, as butter clams are usually deeper than other clams.
Carefully sift through the sand with your hands.
Place the clams in your bucket and keep checking the area—there are often several nearby.
Before cooking, it’s important to clean the clams properly.
Rinse the clams with fresh water to remove mud and sand.
Place the clams in a container of cold saltwater (similar to seawater). Let them sit for 30–60 minutes, so they release sand from inside their shells.
Give them another quick rinse before cooking.
