Enjoy a night or two and leave with a lifetime of memories.
We're incredibly proud of the Bucksport/Fort Knox KOA and would love to share a bit of its history with you. In 1969, two couples formed a partnership and purchased a piece of land, transforming it into a 25-site campground designed for tents and pop-ups, known as Kozy Kampers Campground. The campground changed ownership three times before Joyce and Don Nelson arrived in 1989 and the original Shady Oaks was born. This was a significant undertaking, as neither of them had previous camping experience. They quickly realized that substantial changes were necessary to keep pace with the rapidly growing RV industry. Their to-do list included building a home for themselves, adding a swimming pool, upgrading the power system, installing sewer hookups, and renovating the bathhouse, laundry, and recreation hall. Don spent most days with a chainsaw in one hand and a shovel in the other, while Joyce followed closely behind with a mop and broom. From the start, the Nelsons prioritized creating a family atmosphere. They encouraged seasonal campers to make Shady Oaks their summer home, fostering a vibrant community where friendships blossomed. After 25 years, Bucksport/Fort Knox KOA had grown to 70 sites and 5 cabins. In October 2014, Don and Joyce retired to "island life," and our family, the Greenlaws, took over.David and I (Marlene) have been passionate campers for years, progressing from tenting to a travel trailer and then a pop-up. We'd always dreamed of owning our own campground, a topic we often discussed around campfires during our travels. Our first vacation with our one-month-old daughter, Bethany, was a testament to our "Greenlaw style" of camping. Yes, we had a tent, but we also brought cots, a crib, a refrigerator, a wooden rocking chair, a microwave, and many other comforts of home. That's when David decided we needed a 30-foot travel trailer. Our favorite part of camping has always been enjoying family time around the campfire and the wonderful friendships we've made along the way. In the summer of 2014, our family camped at Bucksport/Fort Knox KOA and instantly fell in love with the Nelsons and the community they had built. What was meant to be a one-month stay has turned into a lifetime commitment. We invite you to come and enjoy a relaxing stay with us at Bucksport/Fort Knox KOA and meet our family and our extended family—our campers. Relax on the front porch rockers, listen to a story or two, or take a dip in the pool. Take time to explore the incredible destinations nearby, including Acadia National Park, Camden-Rockland, and Bangor.
But most importantly, relax and enjoy your time with us. We're dedicated to making your stay both enjoyable and relaxing.
Warmly, David & Marlene Greenlaw
