A Historic Connecticut Camping Destination - The Story of Grandview
Grandview is more than a campground. It is a historic Connecticut destination with a story that reaches back more than a century. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Moodus and East Haddam became popular summer vacation destinations, attracting visitors from cities who wanted to enjoy the lakes, countryside, fresh air, and relaxed pace of New England summer life. The region became so popular that it was sometimes referred to as the “Catskills of Connecticut.”Summer resorts appeared throughout the area, welcoming families and vacationers looking for an escape from everyday life.It was during this era of Connecticut resort history that the Grandview Hotel was built in 1912.Perched high on the hillside, the hotel was named for the spectacular views across the surrounding countryside.Grandview soon became part of the summer resort tradition that helped make Moodus and East Haddam popular vacation destinations.
The Grandview Hotel
As the resort grew, so did the demand for accommodations and services. In 1929, the Grandview Hotel was expanded, including an addition with three kitchens designed to serve the growing Orthodox Jewish vacation community and its dietary requirements.Cottages were also added to the property, providing additional accommodations for summer guests. For decades, Grandview was a thriving summer resort.Visitors came to enjoy the outdoors, spend time with family and friends, escape their everyday routines, and experience the beauty of Connecticut. The property became a place filled with summer vacations, meals, celebrations, friendships, and memories.
The End of the Grandview Resort Era
By the early 1970s, the way Americans vacationed was changing. As air travel became more accessible, families had more opportunities to travel farther from home. The traditional summer-resort era that had defined destinations like Moodus began to fade. The Grandview Hotel closed as a resort in 1976.But Grandview's story continued. The property was later used as a basketball camp and then became the Torah Institute of America, which operated at the property until the early 2000s.After the institute closed, the historic property sat vacant and gradually fell into disrepair.
Bringing Grandview Back to Life
For Valarie and Donald Bergeron, Grandview was more than an abandoned property. After moving to Moodus in 1967, the Bergerons lived directly across the street and watched Grandview change through the decades. They remembered the energy and activity of the former resort and saw what happened when the property was left vacant.Rather than allowing the Grandview story to disappear, the Bergerons purchased the property and began the enormous process of restoring the grounds and creating a new destination.Their vision became Grandview Campresort & Cottages.Today, that vision continues into a new chapter.
Grandview Becomes a KOA Holiday
In 2027, Grandview will become East Haddam / Grandview KOA Holiday, bringing a new chapter to this historic Connecticut property. The campground will become the third KOA owned and operated by the Kelsey family, joining their other parks in Niantic, Connecticut, and Northampton, Massachusetts. Many elements of Grandview's history have been preserved and incorporated into the property, creating a unique camping destination where the past and present come together.Today, guests can enjoy RV camping, tent camping, cabins, recreational amenities, weddings, reunions, celebrations, and family gatherings on a property that has welcomed generations of visitors.Things to Do Near East Haddam, ConnecticutOne of the best things about staying at Grandview is the opportunity to explore everything southeastern Connecticut has to offer.Whether you're looking for hiking, beaches, history, theater, museums, shopping, dining, or family attractions, Grandview provides a convenient home base for your Connecticut adventure.
