Parker Dam is a concrete arch structure commonly called the 'deepest dam in the world'. Seventy-three percent of the dam's structural height of 320 feet is below the original river bed; only about 85 feet of the dam's strucural height is visible (its superstructure rises another 62 feet above the roadway across the top of the dam). Parker Dam has a volume of 380,000 cubic yards of concrete. At its crest, the dam is 856 feet long. Water control is provided by five 50-ft-square gates.Lake Havasu backs up behind the dam for 45 miles and covers more than 20,400 acres (32 square miles). The reservoir's total capacity is 646,200 acre-feet. The Metropolitan Water District`s W. P. Whitsett Intake Pumping Plant for the Colorado River Aqueduct is located on the shore of Lake Havasu about two miles upstream from the dam. The aqueduct begins at the intake pumping plant and extends 242 miles to its terminus at Lake Mathews near Riverside, California. About half of the power generated at Parker Dam is reserved by MWD to pump Colorado River water along the Colorado River Aqueduct. The remaining power is marketed to users in California, Nevada and Arizona by the Western Area Power Administration. By contract, the use of active storage in Lake Havasu to generate power is limited to the elevation between 440 to 450 feet. The Parker Powerplant includes a penstock gate structure, four penstock tunnels, and a powerplant building housing four hydroelectric generating units. Each of the four tunnels and penstocks conveying river water from the forebay at the left end of the dam to the turbines is 22 feet in diameter and has a water capacity of 5,575 cubic feet per second. The plant's nameplate capacity is 120 megawatts.

The town of Ehrenberg, Arizona, was once a bustling steamboat stop along the Colorado River. At its prime, more than 500 people called the small settlement home. hrenberg was created in 1869 and named after Hermann Ehrenberg, a German emigrant. Hermann spent three years working with the Mojave people along the Colorado River from 1863 until his untimely murder in 1866.
The town thrived as a steamboat stop along the river through the mid-1870s. But things began looking grim when the steamboats were replaced by the modern railroad. Ehrenberg soon became a ghost town.
All that remains of the original town of Ehrenberg are the stone-covered graves and hand-carved wooden markers scattered across the Pioneer Cemetery. They pay a ghostly homage to the Old West. The cemetery was given a permanent monument by the Arizona Highway Department in 1935.

Sitting on a bluff overlooking the Colorado River, three miles west of the confluence of the Colorado and the historic Gila River, stand the ruins of Arizona's famous Territorial Prison, and a short distance west are the remaining buildings that served as a part of the Yuma Quartermaster's Depot.
In 1876, ground was broken, and some of the prisoners were pressed into service to build their cells. The first seven inmates moved into the facility on July 1, 1876. The Prison held a variety of law violators, including the legendary stagecoach robber Pearl Hart. The Prison continued in operation for 33 years when, due to overcrowding, all inmates were moved to a new facility in Florence, Arizona.

We are working together to make a child's dream of a better place come true, and I know Celia would be very proud of every one of us. She would have loved to help in such a project herself. We cannot thank our many volunteer “Garden Angels” enough for everything they have done. We could not have done it without them. A community working together to make a child's dream come true. Celia's Rainbow Gardens, located in the Quartzsite Town Park, encompasses 8 acres of the 40-acre park. The gardens were inspired by the dreams of Celia Winer, an 8-year old girl whose goal in life was to make the world a better place. Her love of nature, her desire to save the environment, and her dreams of people working together have been taken to heart by this little desert community. All plants, trees, cacti etc. will eventually have identification markers, and educational displays will also be included along the trails...While the Garden is still a work in progress, you may go out there at any time to look around and see what is happening. Visitors who have been there before will notice many changes, and much more will be done by the end of this season. If you have never been there before, please feel free to come out and see what can be done with many helping hands and hearts....
