Today, the Stratobowl hosts 10-12 balloonists from all over the U.S. in an annual launch paying tribute to this early chapter of space exploration and balloon flight. Over an entire weekend, visitors gather from all over to take in the breathtaking sight of these balloons taking to the sky at sunrise. Plan to arrive early and prepare for a short hike along the Stratobowl Rim Trail to reach the ideal vantage point. Bring flashlights, blankets, chairs, and wear layers as September mornings can be chilly. This event is free of charge, but there are no vendors or bathrooms on-site, so pack snacks and drinks and be sure to practice "leave no trace" principles when the event concludes.
The Stratobowl is only 30 minutes from the Hill City / Needles Highway KOA, with fun stops along the way like the Cosmos Mystery Area. Book your stay and enjoy the start of fall in the beautiful Black Hills!
Get an early start to the trails to avoid heavier trail traffic as the morning progresses.
Registration is open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and hikers need to be off the trail by 4pm.
The event starts at 8 a.m. for all ages of hikers with a $4 hike fee per person. (Regular Crazy Horse Memorial admission can be waved by donating three cans of food.)
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
