To explore the origins of the dunes, book a Lake Lucero Ranger Tour. This three-hour program takes you into the dry lake bed (playa) to witness the formation of selenite crystals and observe the unique desert flora and fauna.

Logistics & Requirements
  • Meeting Point: Gather at the Small Missile Range Gate on US Highway 70 (between mile markers 174 and 175), located 25 miles west of the park headquarters.
  • Transportation: You will caravan in your own vehicle (35 miles round-trip). Ensure you have a full tank of gas and a spare tire.
  • The Hike: This is a moderate, 1.5-mile round-trip trek over rough, unmaintained terrain. It is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for young children or those with mobility impairments. Leashed pets are welcome.
