Many guest inquire about the status of the North Entrance to Crater Lake National Park throughout every season.
Here's the best we can relate in a blog post:
In the spring, the National Park opens the North entrance on or about June 1st. The melt rate of the winter's snow fall is the major influencing factor on when the North entrance opens and can fluctuate by about 2 weeks either side of the June 1st projection date.
In the Fall, the North Entrance to Crater Lake National Park closes on November 1st unless it's closed earlier by snowfall.
The South Entrance to the Crater Lake National Park is open year round, and is about a 40 minute drive from the North Entrance. From Highway 138, take Highway 230 South to Highway 62 East to the South Entrance.
Here is one important fact that many people overlook when considering a trip to Crater Lake when the North Entrance is closed:
When visiting Crater Lake - over 90% of all visitors go to the Rim Village inside the Park as part of their visit. Since the Rim Village is located in the southwest portion of the park, going through the South Entrance instead of the North Entrance only adds about 10 minutes to your drive because of the lower speed limits inside the park versus the highway speeds driving around to the South Entrance.
As a result, for the VAST majority of visitors, it doesn't make that much difference if the North Entrance is open or not. Go ahead and plan that trip!
Finally - Staff at the Lemolo Lake/Crater Lake N KOA Holiday store can give you specifics on if the North Entrance is open on the day you want to go.
That doesn't mean this area has to always be empty. When you start reviewing camping options, your history will display here to help compare sites and find the best stay. You will be able to share your stay information with friends or family and save it for a later time if you have a KOA Account.
