Salome KOA Journey Recreation

This sounds like a fantastic desert getaway!

The Salome KOA Journey is indeed open all year round and provides a welcoming atmosphere for campers of all ages, from winter snowbirds to families on vacation.
Here are some of the top highlights you’ll find at the park:

An endless blue sky book-ended by mountain ranges is the setting for this KOA in Arizona's McMullen Valley,
Regular ATV trips depart right from our park to over 350 miles of trails to old gold mines and beautiful desert views.

Electric Bikes and Dirt Bikes

Electric Bikes and Dirt Bikes

Salome, Arizona, doesn't have paved city bike paths, but it is surrounded by a massive network of over 300 miles of desert trails. These are primarily dirt and gravel "motorized" trails, making them ideal for off-road electric bikes (e-bikes) that can handle rugged terrain.
Top E-Bike Friendly Trails Near Salome
These trails are popular for ATVs and OHVs but are frequently used by e-bikers looking for a desert challenge:

Harquahala Mountain Summit Road Near Salome
10.5-mile climb to the highest peak in southwestern Arizona. It's a steady ascent with "top of the world" views, best suited for high-torque e-mountain bikes.

Arizona Peace Trail
A section of the famous 700-mile loop. The spur south of Salome Road is noted for its steep and loose climbs, offering a "spicy" adventure for experienced riders.
Harquahala Mine Ohv Trail Near Salome A 12.9-mile point-to-point trail. This is generally considered an easier, more relaxed route with views of historic mining sites.
Salome Wilderness Trailhead - The Jug Hiking area Tonto Basin, AZ
A high-energy route full of whoops and wash crossings. It's a "bump and grind" ride perfect for those who want to test their bike's suspension.
Alamo Lake State Park
Located about 38 miles north, this park allows biking on its hilly, lightly trafficked roads. It's a quieter alternative to the rugged backcountry trails.

Know Before You Go

  • Surface Type: Most trails near Salome are "loose over hard" or sandy washes. Wide tires (fat bikes) or mid-drive motors are highly recommended to avoid getting stuck in soft sand.
  • E-Bike Classes: On Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and motorized trails, Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes are typically permitted.
  • Access Point: Many riders start directly from the Salome KOA, which offers immediate access to the interconnected trail system.
  • Essentials: There is very little shade. Always carry extra water, a flat repair kit, and a satellite communicator, as cell service is spotty in the Harcuvar and Harquahala ranges.
