What Makes the South Padre Island Birding Center Special?

The bird sanctuary on South Padre Island gives a unique glimpse into the local wildlife. This island is a critical stop on the Central Flyway Migration Route that many birds take from North America to South America every year. Over 350 bird species are here during migration, representing world-class diversity for birders.

This area has a unique dual ecosystem, with both freshwater and saltwater supporting a wide variety of birds. The South Padre Island Birding Center provides an ideal place to watch these species, with a five-story observation tower and a 3,300-foot boardwalk to explore. Their Alligator Sanctuary on South Padre Island is home to rescued alligators you can also observe.

Essential Visitor Information

You can find the South Padre Island Birding Center at 6801 Padre Boulevard on the island. Their regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday, although these hours may change without notice. You can make sure they're open by calling them at 956-761-6801 before you head over. They are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

The cost of entry is $12 for adults and $10 for students, military and seniors over 65 years old. Children under 12 can get in for $5. Add-ons include the adventure package, an additional $10 for a photo with a baby gator and snake. Binocular rentals cost $3 if you forget to bring your own along. You can also explore their annual passes and memberships, although a single ticket may be more cost-effective if you only visit once a year.
