Driving Glacier's Crown Jewel: Going-to-the-Sun Road

Driving Glacier's Crown Jewel: Going-to-the-Sun Road
  • Saint Mary Lake & Wild Goose Island Lookout: Located just minutes from the St. Mary / East Glacier KOA entrance, this is one of the most photographed spots in the park. A tiny, tree-covered island sits tightly framed by massive, rugged mountain peaks.
  • Jackson Glacier Overlook: This is the absolute best spot on the entire highway to safely view a real glacier right from your vehicle. Bring a pair of binoculars to see the deep blue crevasses in the ice.
  • Logan Pass (The Summit): The highest point on the road rests at 6,646 feet. The visitor center sits in a stunning alpine meadow where mountain goats and bighorn sheep frequently walk right through the parking area.
  • The Weeping Wall: A massive wall of rock sits right next to the driving lane. Natural springs cascade down the stone, drenching vehicles as they pass by—roll up your windows unless you want a quick splash!
  • The Loop: This dramatic hairpin turn provides sweeping views of heavens-high peaks and the stark scars left by historic forest fires.

  • Hidden Lake Overlook (Easy to Moderate | 2.7 miles round-trip): Departs right from the Logan Pass Visitor Center. A boardwalk trail winds upward through alpine meadows called the "Hanging Gardens" to a dramatic overlook of a pristine, high-altitude lake.
  • The Highline Trail (Difficult | 11.8 miles one-way): Built for serious thrill-seekers. The trail begins at Logan Pass and hugs the Garden Wall, offering a narrow path carved directly out of the cliff face high above the highway.
  • Avalanche Lake (Moderate | 4.5 miles round-trip): Located on the lush, cedar-forested west side of the pass. You will hike alongside a roaring glacial gorge to a spectacular lake fed by multiple towering waterfalls cascading down a sheer rock wall.

  • Maximum Length: Vehicles cannot exceed 21 feet in length (including bumpers).
  • Maximum Width: Vehicles cannot exceed 8 feet in width (including mirrors).
  • Maximum Height: Vehicles cannot exceed 10 feet in height.

  • The NPS Free Shuttle: The park operates a complimentary daily shuttle bus during the summer months to move visitors between key stops.
  • The Historic Red Bus Tours: Ride in style inside a vintage 1930s roll-top bus. Expert drivers share rich park history while you take unobstructed photos through the open canvas roof.
  • Sun Tours: Take a guided tour operated by members of the Blackfeet Nation. You will learn about the deep cultural and spiritual connections to the landscape from Native guides.
