Elevating Your Stay – Valdez KOA Campground Upgrades

Over $500,000 Invested. And We Are Not Done.

By Jason and Kristin, Owners of Valdez KOA Journey

We want to tell you something we do not say enough.

Since we took ownership of Valdez KOA Journey in 2020, we have put over half a million dollars back into this campground. Not into our pockets. Back into the property. Into the sites, the cabins, the glamping tents, the store, the bathhouse, the water system, the septic, the fire rings, the staff, and the experience.

We do not talk about it much. But we think you deserve to know.

Infrastructure You Cannot See But Can Always Count On

Some of the biggest investments we have made are completely invisible to guests. That does not make them any less important.

We connected the entire campground to the city water system. Clean, reliable, consistent water at every site. Before this project, we had our own water system. Now you get city water every time.

We also replaced the entire septic mound and converted 34 sites from water and electric only to full hookup with sewer. The result: most sites at Valdez KOA Journey are now full hookup. Pull in, connect, and relax.

The Cabins Got a Complete Overhaul

Since 2020, we have been going through every one of the four Deluxe Cabins by the pond and making them feel new. New luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout. Bathrooms completely redone with glass panel walk-in showers. New furniture, new fold-out couches for extra sleeping, new linens and bedding, new Keurig coffee makers, and new Roku TVs.

We think it shows.

We also renovated the Chalet from the ground up. It started as an existing house on the property. We rebuilt it into a two-story, two-bedroom, two-bathroom vacation rental with a full kitchen, living room, dining room, two furnished decks, and a large private fire pit. It is now the most spacious accommodation at Valdez KOA Journey.

The Details That Make the Difference

We had a local Alaska metal company make us custom heavy steel fire rings. They cut KOA logos, moose, and bears right through the steel, so when the fire is burning, the images glow through the flames. About 50 sites have them now. Worth every penny.

We rebuilt the camp store with new slatwalls, new layout, new displays, new desk, and all new inventory. Because the store is usually the first place guests stop, and we want it to feel like a place worth walking into.

We added six e-bikes with helmets, locks, and extra batteries so guests can ride into downtown Valdez or out to Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery without needing a vehicle.

We added three Paw Pen sites where your dog gets their own private fenced yard right at your RV site.

We expanded the glamping tent decks to 250 square feet of outdoor living space with gas fire pits and outdoor furniture.

We also updated the bathhouse with new floors, new lighting, and two new showers. And we are not done with it.

More is coming.

The Investment You Never See

Some of the most important money we have spent is the kind that guests never notice directly. We invest heavily in our employees, so the people helping you have a great stay are taken care of. We built a dedicated back-of-house laundry room with multiple machines just for staff so your cabin linens are always fresh. We invest every year in professional development so we can keep learning how to run this campground better.

Because we believe that a well-run campground starts behind the scenes.

What Comes Next

We are just getting started. Here is a glimpse of what we are working toward:

A massive new check-in building with a bigger store, guest laundry, and bathhouse downstairs, and a huge covered deck with glass walls upstairs for events and mountain views. New bathhouses throughout the park. A giant dog park and playground up front. Patio sites next to the creek. Treehouse cabins. Pavilions with outdoor fireplaces. Movie nights. Food service and beer and wine at the store. Golf cart rentals, side-by-side rentals, and fishing charter packages. Trails, walkways, and pocket parks throughout the property.

We know it takes time. We are doing it as fast as we can. And we reinvest every dollar possible into Valdez KOA Journey to make it better every year!
