Pictograph Caves

Pictograph Caves

Pictograph Cave State Park is a premier National Historic Landmark located just 7 miles southeast of Billings, Montana. Spanning 23 acres along striking 200-foot sandstone rimrock cliffs, it serves as one of the Northern Plains' most critical archaeological sites. The park protects three distinct caves—Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost Caves—which provided shelter to generations of prehistoric hunters spanning over 3,000 years of continuous human habitation. Excavated heavily starting in 1937, the site yielded over 30,000 artifacts. These included stone tools, jewelry, and ancient weapons that have helped researchers trace the complex lineage of Indigenous peoples on the plains.
