Campground Reviews

Amazing place centrally located, but the lack of cellular and Internet services is unacceptable.

Fantastic place, very close to many attractions!!

I would like KOA to discourage and ban all political banners/flags at all KOA campgrounds. Displaying political banners on a flagpole attached to the RV ladder should not be acceptable at a KOA campground. It should be possible to go on vacation or camping without having to be political or be subjected to someone else's political views.

We had a wonderful stay however we’re not a fan of how close the spots are on top of each other also there were campers coming in and not able to get backed into the spots cause they are to small or the road way is to small we ended up having to help the people coming in back there camper up or move are things in our spot for them to have room.

The campground itself was gorgeous. Well maintained, staff was friendly and good service! Was disappointed the pools large/kiddie pool/waterside/splash pad were extremely cold and seemed like the chemicals weren't very balanced. We will be back, just wished that water activites would have been heated so we could have spent more time there.

Great place

Everything was amazing and great! The only recommendation I would have would be to change our the shower curtains more often. We will be back with more family and friends!!

Loved the campground itself. The showers and rest room could use better DEEP cleaning and could be a bit larger for bigger people

We had a wonderful stay. Very friendly staff and enjoyed the breakfast and dinner tent, nice to take a break from cooking.

I was impressed with the beautiful and super-convenient setting and with all the amenities and optional activities offered. We didn’t stay long enough to enjoy all that was available, but will definitely plan a return visit!

we really enjoyed our stay. Everything met our expectations expect when we went to turn in our key. The lady at the desk did not acknowledge us and was somewhat rude. It was a very poor way to end our stay.

Our stay was great. The campsites need some more gravel added to them as a rain storm will sink your camper for days in slimy mud. This campground is packed all summer and the black hills get alot of rain in the summer. So I am sure they could add some road base to the campsites a section at a time. Otherwise we love this place! Friendly staff and lots for kids to do.

We had a mix up with our site but in the end, it all worked out. We very much enjoyed the rodeo and the scenery. A little more crowded and busy for us, but staying in or near a national park it is to be expected. The staff I dealt with were friendly and helpful.

It was a nice clean campground. The staff were all helpful. The hookups all worked well and there were laundry and other facilities within the campground. It was close to a lot of the main attractions that we'd wanted to see in South Dakota. We didn't spend much time in the campground but the time we did spend in the mornings and late evenings was pleasant!

Pool was dirty. Bathrooms were dirty

We stayed for the weekend & then drove to Yellowstone. We are already planning a week long trip as there is so much to do, without leaving the camp grounds! Suggestion to people reading this......make reservations in advance for horseback riding!!! The rodeo was awesome!!!

From the moment of check in the entire staff was so welcoming! The grounds were beautiful. Even through our week stay we witnessed staff members helping other campers when needed. The amenities were great.

We very much enjoyed our stay. The campsite was pretty snug, especially for backing into. But we got it in there and enjoyed the spot. We liked how many things there were for kids to do as well. The Wifi could be improved a little too, as we were not able to get that at our site, and I needed to work during some of our stay. I ended up having to go to town to get that done.

had an amazing time & wish we had booked more days!! So much to do, had so much fun at the Rodeo!! The two complaints I have are- there were multiple piles of Dog poo in our site, I had to pick it up or risk it getting in our camper. The shower rooms needed better cleaning. The vents were caked with dust- a little extra effort in cleaning would have made a huge difference.

We had a good stay at the campground we stayed primitive and it was a great time. Clean showers bathrooms and plenty of stuff to do
Aug 24, 2021
405 was terrible and barley fit my 38 ft camper. To me the site I had should only be for small campers. We had many adults and kids fall down the site because it was so uneven and it was gravel so your feet would slide right down the hill and you’d end up on your butt. public showers near the rodeo arena was absolutely disgusting! Mold everywhere especially the shower curtains and no hot water

We come here every year and always enjoy ourselves. This year we brought our grandsons.
Aug 24, 2021
They placed us in a very cramped (site 16) site. The person that came into the site next to us, came in backwards which basically put us at the mercy of our neighbors in order to get our camper in/out the next day. I was also required to pay the extra resort fee even though we were in later and out early and did not utilize anything other than a shower. Maybe if you planned to stay put & had kids

Stay was fun- only downside is that as adults, we pay a resort fee and yet are stuck with little kids in arm floaties in the hot tub kicking in your face swimming. They need to be banned from hot tub. Plus hot tub needs to be actually hot and not lukewarm- parents are clueless and just stand there watching their kid kick around in ppls faces. Lame.

Super friendly staff. They even let us check-in early as we had our timing mixed up on when to arrive. So thankful for that! Also love the quiet hours. Even though it’s packed full, it was so quiet and enjoyable when it came time for bed!

Staff was friendly and accommodating (changed sites twice at our request) and the location and setting was great. However, the sites were VERY small and packed together and the showers in comfort station #4 were disgusting (mold on walls and shower curtains).

We loved it, it was our first time staying at Palmers Gulch. There was so much to do. We’re already talking about another trip for next year.
Aug 24, 2021
I only wish I had planned ahead and realized all this park had to offer - incredible
Aug 23, 2021
We love Palmer Gulch but disappointed this stay. Major maintenance needed! The turf cover on the mini golf and the clubs are totally ruined, the water slide is filthy with black marks from the mats slowing the rider down, the pool was cold and dirty, our cabin was very dusty with a towel and pillowcase left behind the couch from a previous renter. But the trail ride & chuckwagon was fantastic!
Aug 23, 2021
The only issue I had was the lack of WIFI. The main reason we booked the deluxe cabin was that WIFI was advertised as included. Until the WIFI is stable you should not advertise that it is included. This was not just for entertainment. A child with diabetes who’s devices utilize WIFI to work was the reason we opted for the deluxe cabin.

Wonderful campground. Pool, water slide, table tennis, horses to ride, UTVs to rent, onsite coffee shop and wine bar, onsite laundry, ice cream, pizza, and wings. Make sure to go on for the chuckwagon dinner. Cons: Poor staffing for scheduled activities. Restaurant not currently open this season d/t staffing. Showers could use more frequent cleaning and upkeep.

Disappointed that the weekly schedule of events was consistently wrong on times. Rodeo was good but time wrong on weekly. Fun zone opened up 45 mins late including slide and bounce pillow, which I was told “we are getting to it”. Disappointed the new pool wasn’t open. I pay the high price for the extra amenities. But when most are not available I find myself questioning why I pay the high

The campsite was backwards. Based on every other camp site we have used, the fire pit and picnic table were on the wrong side of the site. Very disappointing that there was no TV or internet service. There was no simple path from our site to the bathrooms. We had to walk through someone else's site. But none of this got us down. We enjoyed everything else you offered!

Just ok. The good: close to Mt. Rushmore and other attractions. Excellent KOA reservation system, lots of resort activities we don’t use. The bad: $12 resort fee, way off level sites, zero cell coverage, just dirt, no gravel, crowded. We didn’t use the horses, playground, rodeo, car and atv/utv rentals. Next time we will find another, less costly campground.

Disappointing/ Unfriendly. We arrived on Wednesday August 18. The reception area was not busy. Two people working the desk (a young man and an older woman). One check in front of us. We had the older woman who asked our name, how we wanted to pay the balance and never spoke another word to us. No explanations or anything. Women working the store were equally as unfriendly. VERY DISAPPOINTING

Very disappointed with this KOA. Was told we were next to brother's family who we were traveling with, but ended up at other end of the row. Called pull-thru sites, which technically they are, but they are so short you can't keep your tow vehicle attached. Beautiful bathroom/shower buildings, but you could tell they were only surface cleaned. Grime in edges.

Loved friendly staff, activities for children and lots of fun things to do. The only thing that I think could be improved is keeping the pool clean. Yes, there a lot of people but at 10pm is plenty of time to shock it. Other KOAs water is blue /clear and you can smell the cholorine. Also, showers should have some mold /mildew remover sprayed on it and shower curtains look old and stained.

We dry docked for the night since they are closed for the season. This KOA is very beautiful with deer coming right up to the front door.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nites, and it was Phenomenal. A beautiful Resort atmosphere and even though it was at the very end of the season, every one there was very helpful and especially Becky. She is so knowledgeable about the area. I worked for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and I would hire here in a heartbeat to work with. KOA is very fortunate to have employees of this caliber.

This KOA is in a perfect location and would love to stay here again. We rented a glammed cabin which is just a upgrade from their simple cabins but well worth it in my opinion. Your cabin already comes with bedding, a mini fridge, microwave, outdoor grill and table and chairs. You have a beautiful view of the woods and the campground itself has so many activities. You're right in the middle of the black forest, custer state park and Mt Rushmore. I will definitely be staying there again.
