Campground Reviews

We stayed just one night while visiting Mt Rushmore. The check in staff was very helpful in recommendations for local restaurants & for visiting Mt Rushmore in the short time we had available. We only used the bathrooms & they were very clean. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is we had to edit our reservation last minute, we tried calling in the evening & no one answered the phone.

Wi-Fi on the public Palmer Gulch never worked over 3 nights/4 days. Wi-fi on our personal cell phone was slow/poor. Apparently no towers nearby. Stayed at site 506, which was back in with gravel. Size of the site was okay, but our picnic table was basically right next to the neighbor's black water septic tank connection. Would stay again in a pull through site, especially with a Deluxe KOA patio.

Too many things closed. No bar and restaurant. No internet or cell service.

Mount Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch resort is a beautiful park. We enjoyed our stay tremendously.

The employees were very friendly. All the restaurants and shops were closed. The public showers & restrooms were clean. The BIGGEST problem was the sites were way to close together and too short for the RVs they had assigned to them. We have only a 28 ft. TT and fit the pull through perfect but many of the huge RVs stuck out into the narrow roads causing issues. Will NEVER return to this park

Awesome place and centralized to all local activities. Recommend for families or couples. Friendly atmosphere and very accommodating!

Nice stay. Had everything you would need. Love that there is plenty of room for dig walks. Wish lots were bigger but it is what it is.

Really awesome. Wish we could of stayed longer. Marty and Hope

Staff was very friendly but sites were very close together, muddy, the entire campground looked run down/overused. It appeared that emphasis was on quantity, not quality. Not what we expected for a resort KOA. Also, WiFi was non-existent.

Campground and personnel were excellent.

When I booked our stay we registered with 2dogs. When we got there we was told they didn’t slow our breed of dogs in the park. We did get to stay but we had to load our dogs and take them off property to potty them. Almost all amenities was closed down and couldn’t even get pizza because their ovens were old and malfunctioning.

This camps site was more than expected. The facilities were beautiful and Very well-maintained. There was a wide variety of activities, foods, and services with everything that we needed. The outdoor kitchen was a hidden gem. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly.

There is no cell and there wifi is iffy, no cable or digital signal maybe if you had satellite would be ok. most sites are on the small side. There are a lot of things to do on the grounds and close by. Also there are shops on grounds to go through

We were in the off season and sad to have missed so many things. My only complaint was lack of phone and WiFi.
Sep 25, 2021
The park is very nice !! We were kinda bummed that none of the shops were open except for the registration gift shop/store. We got in kinda late so not many options for food at 7:45pm or breakfast food. We did get a pizza at the last minute which KUDOS to the two young gentleman on Wednesday night when we got in it was already 8pm and they made us a couple pizzas and stayed open for others.

We had a lovely time at this location. It was clean, friendly, and a great distance from popular attractions in the area.
Sep 24, 2021
Convenient to everything in the area. A lot to do within the Campground, but very crowded while we were there. Some spaces like ours had standing water issues and the stream/creek behind our site was a breeding ground for mosquitos.
Sep 24, 2021
The campground literally has everything you need. Groceries, camp supplies, restaurants etc. It was too late in the season but the have stables bike rentals and rodes.

Clean with wifi. Great location. Glad to see the single burner cooktop. Handy for breakfast or any other light cooking. Really appreciated that.

The mattresses at our cabin were super super thin and uncomfortable. We came after “the season,” but it was still nice out, so it was disappointing to not be able to rent the bikes and other things. A/C is 100% needed. The cabin was stifling until after midnight, but with kids, bedtime is earlier. That said, the employees here were so genuinely kind and friendly, and we did have a good time.

Excellent park! Very clean, centrally located to all the attractions. So much fun for kids.

Awesome campground!

Beautiful location. Easy to get to great attractions. Nice, helpful people!

Our site was ridiculously small. Our vehicle had to be parked between our camper and the neighbor with barely room to walk between AND up against our picnic table. I think the staff should put more effort into clean restrooms instead of clean UTVs and rental cars. Prices of supplies in the store were hyper inflated.

Nicely run KOA. Stayed in a cabin which was clean and comfortable. Wifi was sketchy and not able for using cellular in an emergency. Thank you for releasing a direct number to me for family to get me. Luckily wasn’t needed. Only downside was the showers. Shower heads used either were leaky and poor flow or needed a bad cleaning from algae growing around spray outlets.

Stayed here three nights in one of the deluxe sites with a cement patio, swing bench, patio table, fire ring and Weber gas bbq. Very nice spacious site. This is a very large KOA resort with amenities like small water slide, miniature golf, pools, golf cart rentals and ATV rentals. Very close to Mount Rushmore and crazy horse monument. This is the nicest rv park we’ve stayed at.

Our site was very small. The space between campsites - well there was minimal space! We paid premium price for our spot and yet everything was closed down for the season including no more ice for the season. If you are going to shut down everything toward the end of season, then reduce your prices to reflect that. Extremely disappointed.

Very pretty but very big with lots of activities for kids

Beautiful KOA and so convenient to Mt Rushmore!
Sep 23, 2021
Staff not overly friendly. Restrooms not cleaned very well, one sink had the same piece of paper in it the entire 4 days. Showers need new curtains that fit the size of opening with no gaps. need to provide walk path from tent site area to restrooms/shower in R?V area long walk to go around RV parking rows without cutting thru. Overall we had a good stay but some minor things need to be addressed.

You advertise Free Wifi. Very difficult to get and very spotty service…this needs to be disclosed. Barking dogs early and several times during the day. Saw no KOA staff respond to numerous complaints. These comments need to be publicly displayed.

Check in person was rude. I got stuck going "over the hill"...had to go that way because my site was back-in. Apparently this campground has never taken a 55,000 pound luxury coach "over the hill" before. I sprayed stones onto the cabins while slipping down, when others just drove down my road and turned around at the end like I could have easily done. Lots of mud, no car parking, unlevel site.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Palmer Gulch even though we were later in the season so some amenities were closed. Beautiful, clean, well run facility. We would definitely stay again.

Didn't know that phone coverage would be 'hit or miss.' Entire time while there, it was 'missed'. Staff (on checking in very nice and informative); two days later with a different staff at check at desk it was quite different. Abrupt, didn't listen to the request and proceeded to 'explain' each charge for previous 2 days; not the day for which I requested a receipt.
Sep 23, 2021
The WiFi and phone reception is terrible. With all this KOA has to offer spend some money to upgrade and enhance the system. The location is great. The sites are ok. Very close together.

I was disappointed that u advertised some many activities and things to do. It turned out most of those were closed for the season. U should let people know that and charge accordingly- not full price. Tim Conroy

Great KOA...enjoyed our stay. Great location for base camp for this area.
Sep 22, 2021
I was very disappointed in this campground. my trailer barely fit in the lot. I had to park in between my rig and the one next to me. I had to park over the fire pit and had just enough room to drop my steps with out hitting my truck. this was uncalled for as i booked this in March and advised them my rig was 53 feet long. The gentleman that parked my advised to put total length in trailer box.

Dirt/muddy interior roads complete with many potholes! Several pullthrough sites are also dirt and muddy after a rain with potholes! WiFi extremely weak and intermittent at my site 148. No cell service at my site. All roads and sites would have to be paved for me to consider this a "resort"!

Could have been cleaner. Like window seals , window glass and blinds.couldn’t see out the door glass

UP: Pleasant with lots of family amenities... that we did not use but appreciate that you provided. DOWN: Terrible wi-fi. We were in space 151 and despite all the repeaters mounted on the nearby “comfort station”, the connection was intermittent at best but mostly not there. Also, as Verizon users we got no service. This was very disappointing... especially for being so high priced a KO

A corporation this large should invest in effective wifi. It is frustrating having to go into Hill city to make a phone call or text someone. The interior roads need much more gravel as well .

We loved our campsite. It’s awesome to see how dog friendly they are. We have 3 dogs and did not feel like a pain when they were barking. Staff is really accommodating and helpful with questions

We dry docked for the night since they are closed for the season. This KOA is very beautiful with deer coming right up to the front door.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nites, and it was Phenomenal. A beautiful Resort atmosphere and even though it was at the very end of the season, every one there was very helpful and especially Becky. She is so knowledgeable about the area. I worked for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and I would hire here in a heartbeat to work with. KOA is very fortunate to have employees of this caliber.

This KOA is in a perfect location and would love to stay here again. We rented a glammed cabin which is just a upgrade from their simple cabins but well worth it in my opinion. Your cabin already comes with bedding, a mini fridge, microwave, outdoor grill and table and chairs. You have a beautiful view of the woods and the campground itself has so many activities. You're right in the middle of the black forest, custer state park and Mt Rushmore. I will definitely be staying there again.
