A little back story first...
Almost everyone knows who St. Patrick is/was & what St. Patrick's Day is & that is has to do with the Irish. What many don't know is that because of the mixing pot that New Orleans is, we don't just have a huge Irish population, but we also have a huge Italian population (let's be real, we have every one of the cultures here in Nola!)! Just as the Irish St. Patrick's is celebrated all month long in March with parades & block parties, the Italian celebrate their own saint, Joseph, that month as well. All March long you will find St. Joseph's altars & parades. Some of these parades come together & we end up with one of our biggest parades of the year here in New Orleans, the Irish/Italian parade, which is even bigger than our Mardi Gras parades, with over 100 floats! Just like every other parade, everyone here & their homes are decked out all month in St. Pat's & St. Joseph's festive gear!
Now, back to the continuing blog journey...
We have now wrapped our month long Irish/Italian festivities & moved into Easter. Just like we have mentioned in our blog posts chronicling parade season, we move from one to another. After our April Fools day parade, we move to easter. Easter here in New Orleans sees numerous parades & brunches in the French Quarter! We hold to our traditions & Easter is steeped in them! Whether you have or plan on bringing children with you & want to experience Easter at the zoo or aquarium or one of our famous city park egg hunts, or you want to see everyone decked out in their Easter bonnets/best headed from mass to brunch & participating in Easter parades, it's always a grand time in New Orleans for Easter! Easter ends our parades for the season (unless you count second lines & stuff) until we get back to Halloween. We will now move into festival season!
