There’s something special about camping in the fall.
The summer crowds have quieted down, the air is crisp and refreshing, campfires feel a little cozier, and the forests around Parry Sound begin to put on one of their most beautiful shows of the year.
If you’ve never visited us in the fall, you might be wondering: What is fall camping actually like around Parry Sound, and when should I come to see the colours?
Here’s everything you need to know before planning your autumn getaway.
This is probably the question we hear most often!
The short answer is: it changes every year.
Generally, the Parry Sound and Georgian Bay area begins seeing noticeable colour in late September, with the display building into October. Because we’re so close to Georgian Bay and surrounded by the Canadian Shield, colour can develop a little differently from areas farther inland.
That means there isn’t one guaranteed “peak weekend” every year.
Instead, you’ll see the landscape gradually transform. One weekend might bring hints of yellow and orange, while the following week can bring a much more dramatic mix of gold, red, orange and green.
And honestly? That’s part of the fun.
Even when the leaves aren’t at their peak, fall in Parry Sound is beautiful. The combination of evergreen pines, granite Canadian Shield and changing hardwoods creates that classic Muskoka-meets-Georgian-Bay landscape that makes the area so special.
If you’re someone who thinks camping is only for July and August, fall might change your mind.
Fall brings cooler daytime temperatures and crisp evenings that are perfect for sitting around the campfire. Bring your favourite sweater, pack a few extra blankets and settle in for a cozy night under the stars.
One of the best things about autumn is the slower pace.
The busy summer season has wound down, making fall a great time to explore the area, take a peaceful hike or simply enjoy some quiet time at your campsite.
Let’s be honest — campfires just feel better in the fall.
There’s something about warming up beside the fire after a day outdoors, roasting marshmallows and listening to the crackle of the wood while the temperature drops around you.
Cooler temperatures make exploring the area's trails especially enjoyable. The Parry Sound region is full of rocky Canadian Shield landscapes, forests and Georgian Bay views, and fall adds another layer of colour to the scenery.
And you don’t even have to leave the campground to get started.
One of the best things about staying at Parry Sound KOA in the fall is having access to the Seguin Trail right from our property.
The historic Seguin Trail is a multi-use trail that winds through the forests and rugged Canadian Shield landscape of the Parry Sound area. In the fall, it becomes an especially beautiful way to experience the changing colours.
Whether you’re looking for a longer adventure, a morning walk or simply want to get out and enjoy the crisp autumn air, having the trail so close makes it easy to add some exploring to your camping weekend.
You can head out for the day and return to your campsite when you’re ready for a warm drink, a campfire and some downtime.
No complicated planning. No long drive to find a trail. Just step out of camp and start exploring.
One of the best parts about staying at Parry Sound KOA is that you don't have to choose between camping and exploring.
We make a great home base for your fall adventure.
Spend the morning exploring, stop for lunch or a coffee in town, head back to camp for a campfire, and then venture out again in the afternoon.
Take a stroll through downtown Parry Sound, explore the local shops, grab a coffee or enjoy the waterfront.
The town has a relaxed feel in the fall, making it a great time to browse local businesses and take in the scenery without the hustle and bustle of the summer season.
For a great view of the area, Tower Hill offers panoramic views over Parry Sound Harbour and Georgian Bay.
Fall is also a great time to experience some of the seasonal events happening throughout the surrounding area.
One favourite is the Cranberry Festival in Bala, a classic Muskoka fall event celebrating the cranberry harvest with food, vendors, entertainment and plenty of autumn atmosphere.
You’ll also find fall markets, craft shows, local vendors and seasonal events happening throughout Muskoka and the Parry Sound area during September and October.
It’s a great opportunity to pick up something local, enjoy some seasonal treats and experience a little bit of cottage-country culture while you’re here.
This is where we think fall camping gets really good.
Instead of packing up every morning and driving somewhere new, make the campground your home base.
You can wake up surrounded by trees, enjoy your morning coffee at your campsite, head out for a day of fall exploring, and return in the afternoon to relax around your own campfire.
With the Seguin Trail running through our property, local attractions and events nearby, and the beautiful Parry Sound landscape surrounding you, there’s plenty to explore without having to spend your entire trip in the car.
Whether you're travelling in an RV, bringing your tent or staying in one of our cabins, you get the best of both worlds: the outdoors right outside your door and some of the best fall experiences in the Parry Sound area just a short drive away.
And after a day of hiking, sightseeing, shopping or exploring, there's nothing quite like coming back to camp.
Summer may be the classic camping season, but fall has a completely different kind of magic.
The changing forests, quiet trails, crisp air, warm campfires and beautiful Canadian Shield landscape make autumn one of our favourite times of year to be outside.
And the best part?
You don't have to plan your entire trip around catching the exact peak of the leaves.
Come for the scenery, stay for the camping, explore the area at your own pace — and enjoy whatever version of autumn nature happens to bring you that weekend.
Whether you spend your days hiking the Seguin Trail, exploring Parry Sound, visiting a fall market, taking a scenic drive through cottage country or simply sitting around the campfire, Parry Sound KOA makes the perfect home base for your autumn getaway.
So grab your sweater, pack the marshmallows and come experience fall in Parry Sound. We'll save you a spot around the campfire.
