Rainy Day Camping in Parry Sound: What to Do When It Rains

Rainy Day Camping in Parry Sound: What to Do When It Rains

Let’s be honest — rain isn’t always what you picture when you plan a camping trip.

But a rainy forecast doesn’t have to mean a wasted day! In fact, Parry Sound has plenty of ways to keep your day fun, whether you want to explore local history, browse downtown shops, catch a movie or show, or simply settle in somewhere cozy.

So if you’re camping at Parry Sound KOA and the skies open up, don’t pack up your camping gear just yet. Here are some of our favourite ways to spend a rainy day around Parry Sound.

Spend the Day Exploring Downtown Parry Sound

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to slow down and explore downtown Parry Sound.

Take a stroll through the local shops, browse for something unique to bring home, and stop somewhere for a coffee or lunch. You can easily turn a rainy morning into a relaxed afternoon of shopping, food, and local finds.

Get Lost in a Book at Bearly Used Books

If you love books, make a stop at Bearly Used Books on James Street.

This downtown bookstore has an enormous selection of used books, with everything from fiction and non-fiction to children's books and plenty of unexpected finds. It's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time browsing the shelves — especially when there's nowhere else you need to be on a rainy afternoon.

Browse Local Art

For something a little more artsy, check out 18 James Street, the studio, gallery, and boutique of local artist and fashion designer Jessica Vergeer.

It's a great little stop while exploring downtown and gives you a chance to see local art and creative work in a more intimate setting.

Parry Sound is full of local artists and makers, so keep an eye out for other galleries, boutiques, and seasonal shops while you're downtown.

Step Back in Time at the Museum on Tower Hill

If you're looking for something educational — but still interesting for the whole family — head to the Museum on Tower Hill.

The museum explores the history of the West Parry Sound District, including logging, shipping, northern life, and the history of the area's railway. There are also changing exhibitions throughout the year.

One of the fun features is the model railway representing the Ottawa, Arnprior & Parry Sound Railway.

It's also located right beside Tower Hill Lookout and the Heritage Garden, so if the rain lets up, you can step outside and explore the rest of Tower Hill too.

Good to know: The museum's hours change seasonally, so check ahead before heading over. From September through June, the museum currently lists Wednesday–Saturday hours.

Visit the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame

Hockey fans — this one's for you.

Located inside the Charles W. Stockey Centre, the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame celebrates Parry Sound's own hockey legend and the area's sporting history.

The exhibits include memorabilia, trophies, and interactive elements that make this more than just a walk-through museum.

It's a particularly easy rainy-day combination because you can visit the Hall of Fame and then explore the Stockey Centre and waterfront area without needing to plan a full outdoor excursion.

See What's Happening at the Stockey Centre

The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts isn't just a summer destination.

Throughout the year, the Stockey Centre hosts concerts, performances, workshops, films, and other events. If the forecast is looking gloomy during your stay, check their event calendar to see what's happening.

You might just turn a rainy evening into a night out!

The Centre sits right on the Parry Sound waterfront and is also home to the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.

Go Bowling at The Zone

If you're camping with kids — or you're just competitive with your camping crew — head to The Zone on Joseph Street.

The Zone offers bowling, an arcade, and indoor play areas, making it an easy rainy-day option when everyone needs to burn off some energy.

Challenge the family to a bowling game, let the kids enjoy the arcade, and make an afternoon of it.

Just be sure to check their current hours before heading over, as weekday and weekend hours can vary.

Try Something Different at Synapse Game Emporium

Looking for something a little less traditional?

Synapse Game Emporium is a local game shop and escape-room destination in the Parry Sound area. It's a fun option for families, couples, and groups looking for something interactive to do indoors.

Rainy camping days are actually a great excuse to try something you've never done before!

Find Some Local Inspiration

If you're the creative type, Parry Sound has plenty of ways to spend an afternoon browsing local art and handmade goods.

Check out places such as G'zaagin Art Gallery, which showcases First Nations art and work from Indigenous artists and artisans.

You can also look for seasonal art classes, workshops, and events happening around town. Parry Sound Tourism regularly highlights local creative experiences and events.

Make the Rain an Excuse for Lunch

Sometimes the best rainy-day activity is simply going somewhere delicious.

Pick a local restaurant, grab lunch, order something warm, and let someone else do the cooking for a change.

For a more relaxed afternoon, downtown Parry Sound has several restaurants and cafés where you can settle in and wait out the weather.

And if you're looking for a cozy evening experience, check out Out with Wine on James Street for wine and small plates.

Back at Camp

Of course, you don't always have to leave the campground.

Sometimes the best rainy-day camping experience is a cozy one.

Make some coffee, pull out a board game, read a book, watch a movie, or spend some time relaxing in your RV or cabin.

If the rain is light, grab a rain jacket and take a short walk around the campground. There's something pretty peaceful about being in the woods while it's raining.

And if the weather clears later in the day, that's your cue to get outside and make the most of the rest of your evening.

Rainy Day? Make It Part of the Adventure.

The weather is one of the things that makes camping unpredictable — and that's part of the adventure!

A rainy day gives you the chance to see a different side of Parry Sound, explore some local businesses, learn a little history, or simply slow down and enjoy your camping companions.

So next time you see rain in the forecast, don't automatically assume your camping trip is ruined.

Grab your rain jacket, pick an adventure, and make the most of your rainy day in Parry Sound!

And when you're ready to get back outside, Parry Sound KOA will be waiting for you.
