Step back in time to the gold rush craze of the 1860s in historic Virginia and Nevada City.  Tour the old shops on main street, back street homes and cabins of the old west.  Mine for gold and learn how prospectors found their fortunes at the River of Gold in Nevada City (1 mile from Virginia City).
Afternoons and evenings there are two vaudeville shows to choose from with performances that reflect the entertainment from 1880s mining towns.
If you're up for some adventure, take your OHV, bike or 4x4 up Alder Gulch where gold was first discovered and explore miles of roads and old mine operations in the foothills and mountains surrounding town.  There is an extensive trail system around town and also Nevada City throughout the old dredge piles left behind decades ago that are now becoming overgrown and hard to recognize as old mine tailings.

Experience the Vigilante Trail 3-7-77

During the 1920s and 30s the Vigilante Trail was a primitive dirt road loading to Yellowstone Park.  Adventuresome early travelers relied on these simple hubcap-sized trail markers fastened to trees and posts as their only guide through this wild country. 3-7-77 refers to the Vigilantes coded warning, left to encourage frontier ruffians and criminals to leave the country..or else.  The warning was later incorporated into the symbol for the Montana Highway Patrol.
