Two days is enough to see the best of Winona without rushing. Here's how we'd spend them.
Day 1, morning. Start with doughnuts at Bloedow Bakery on East Broadway (try a maple long john), then drive up to Garvin Heights. The overlook trail is short, about 0.4 miles, and you can also drive to the top. Either way, it's the best way to get your bearings: river, town, lakes and bluffs all in one view.
Day 1, afternoon. Head to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum on Riverview Drive, right on the Mississippi. (It's closed Mondays.) Then walk downtown. Stop into WNB Financial on Main Street to see its Tiffany Studios windows, and into Merchants Bank, a 1912 Prairie School building with stained glass and a mural of the valley. You can see the lobby during weekday banking hours.
Day 1, evening. Walk out to Levee Park to watch river traffic as the light goes down, then find dinner downtown.
Day 2, morning. Walk or bike the paved loop around Lake Winona, about five miles, with Sugar Loaf on the bluff above. If you'd rather climb, the Sugar Loaf trailhead is off East Lake Boulevard.
Day 2, midday. Take a narrated cruise on the Winona tour boat. Trips generally run April through October, so check the schedule. If you're in town on a Saturday morning in season, the farmers market is at Levee Park.
Day 2, afternoon. Pick one: the Winona County History Center, the Polish Cultural Center & Museum on Liberty Street, or the Watkins museum displays a block away. If the weather's good, drive 15–20 minutes south to Pickwick Mill, an 1850s limestone gristmill on Big Trout Creek that's open seasonally.
Winona KOA Holiday is six miles south of downtown, so every stop on this list is a short drive from your site.
