Fall in Winona: Bluff Color, Orchards and Scenic Drives

Fall in Winona: Bluff Color, Orchards and Scenic Drives

Fall is a good time to visit Winona. The bluffs turn color, the orchards open and the summer crowds thin out.

When the color peaks. Across Minnesota, color usually peaks from late September to mid-October, with the southeast corner turning last. Visit Winona says this stretch of the river valley typically peaks in early to mid-October. Each area holds its peak for about a week. Check the Minnesota DNR's Fall Color Finder, updated Thursdays.

Drives

  • US-61, the Great River Road. The DNR recommends the stretch between Winona and Red Wing for fall color, with bluffs on one side and the river on the other.
  • Apple Blossom Drive Scenic Byway. About 17–19 miles along the ridge between Dakota and La Crescent, with valley views and orchards selling apples, cider and pumpkins. Stop at Apple Blossom Overlook Park for a short trail to a bluff overlook.
  • Wisconsin Great River Road (WIS-35). Cross the bridge in Winona and follow the river north or south on the Wisconsin side.

Hikes for color. Garvin Heights gives you the whole valley in one view. King's Bluff at Great River Bluffs State Park walks you through oak savanna to an overlook above the river.

Apples and an old mill. La Crescent Applefest is usually in mid to late September. Pickwick Mill, an 1850s limestone gristmill just south of Winona, is open seasonally through October.

Winona KOA Holiday is open through October 15, in the wooded bluffs six miles south of town. Pack layers and plan on a campfire.
