Mountain Biking the Winona Bluffs

Mountain Biking the Winona Bluffs

Winona's bluffs aren't only for hiking. In the past few years the city and local riders have built out a real trail system on the bluffs above Lake Winona, about 15 minutes from the campground.

Bluffside Park. About 15 miles of multi-use trails, maintained by the Winona Area Mountain Bikers, an IMBA chapter, in partnership with the city. Park at Holzinger Lodge, 925 W Lake Blvd, for the lower trails and the bike park, or on Wincrest Drive for the upper trails. There's a bike repair station in the park.

Where to ride

  • Chickadee Circuit. A beginner-friendly loop on top of the bluff, starting from the west end of Wincrest Drive.
  • Ope! A 1.4-mile two-way trail that climbs about 450 feet and links the lower and upper parts of the park.
  • Danger Noodle and Zinger. Bike-only downhill trails for intermediate riders that finish near the lodge.
  • The original singletrack. Wildwood Loop, Quarry and Cistern are more technical, intermediate trails through the hardwoods.
  • Oberton Family Bike Park. Opened in 2024 just west of the lodge, with a tot track and jump and drop lines from beginner to advanced.

Before you ride. Trails close when they're wet to prevent erosion, so check TrailBot (or the app) for current status. Most trails are shared with hikers, so ride in control and yield. For repairs or a part, Adventure Cycle and Ski is downtown at 178 Center Street.

More riding nearby. Hixon Forest in La Crosse, about 40 minutes south, has roughly 26 miles of trails across its Upper Hixon, Lower Hixon and Gateway areas, maintained by ORA Trails.

What's coming. The city's Bluffs Traverse project plans to connect Bluffside Park with Garvin Heights and Sugar Loaf over the next several years.

Bring the bikes. Winona KOA Holiday is about 15 minutes from the Holzinger Lodge trailhead.
