Winona on the Water: Cruises, Paddling and Fishing

Winona on the Water: Cruises, Paddling and Fishing

Winona is a river town first. Here's how to get out on the water.

Take a cruise. The Winona tour boat runs narrated cruises along the riverfront, generally April through October. You'll see the bluffs from the water. Check the operator's schedule.

Paddle the backwaters. Across the river from downtown, the signed Aghaming Water Trail loops 6.7 miles through quiet backwater channels of the Upper Mississippi refuge. It's rated moderate to difficult and isn't usable in floods. Experienced paddlers can take the 11.3-mile Verchota Trail. If you'd rather go with a guide, Broken Paddle Guiding Company runs backwater kayak tours between Winona and Red Wing.

Stay on the lake. Lake Lodge on Lake Winona rents canoes, kayaks and paddleboards for use on the lake, from mid-May into September.

Go fishing. Shore anglers fish at Levee Park downtown, and boat anglers work the tailwaters below the locks and dams. A valid Minnesota or Wisconsin license lets you fish the Mississippi boundary waters between the railroad tracks on each side of the river; residents need their own state's resident license. Check each state's border-water rules.

Bring your boat. Winona has public launches to the main channel and the backwaters (see winonamn.gov). Levee Park has boat docking downtown. High water can close landings, so check before you go.

Wear a life jacket, watch for barges on the main channel and stay clear of the dams. Winona KOA Holiday is six miles south of town and has boat trailer parking; ask the office before you arrive.
