Winona's Bluffs: Hikes With a View

Winona's Bluffs: Hikes With a View

The bluffs are what make Winona look like Winona. Here are the hikes that get you to the top.

Garvin Heights Park. About 0.4 miles, with 378 steps on the upper section, to an overlook 500-plus feet above town. You can drive up instead. It's a good first stop in Winona.

Sugar Loaf. Winona's signature landmark. The trailhead is off East Lake Boulevard, with parking on Lake Boulevard. The trails are beginner to intermediate; the rock column itself is for climbers with gear. The city closes the trail when it's muddy.

Bluffside Park and Holzinger Lodge Trail. About 15 miles of shared hiking and mountain-bike trails on the bluffs above Lake Winona. Start at Holzinger Lodge, 925 W Lake Blvd. Expect steep, rocky sections and hardwood forest, and note that trails close when wet.

Great River Bluffs State Park. South of Winona, King's Bluff Trail runs about 1.25 miles one way on mowed grass and packed dirt to an overlook high above the river. The East Overlook Trail is only 0.3 miles. A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required.

John A. Latsch State Park. Twelve miles north of Winona on US-61. A half-mile trail with 592 steps climbs more than 500 feet. Short, steep and worth it. State park vehicle permit required.

Across the river. Perrot State Park in Trempealeau, Wisconsin, has steep trails up 520-foot Brady's Bluff (Wisconsin vehicle pass required). Grandad Bluff in La Crosse puts you about 600 feet above the city; take a car, not the RV, since the road has a 5-ton limit.

Wear real shoes and carry water. Winona KOA Holiday is in the bluffs six miles south of town and has its own trail to a river-valley overlook, so you can start right from your site.
