The climate in this region varies from arid in the western parts to humid and subtropical in the eastern part. Winter is generally very mild in this region and summers are quite hot and there is a lot of humidity in the southern areas. The Gulf Coast area has very pleasant and mild winters and the Gulf of Mexico's warm waters greatly influence the climate in this region. This region's southeast section borders the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. This region is home to three National Parks, Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains Natural Parks in Texas and Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas. Texas has a variety of activities and attractions from natural wonders to historic locations, museums and amusement parks. Visit San Antonio River Walk for strolling and dining, the Alamo historic site, Austin for the state capitol building and the music scene, Natural Bridge Caverns, or Space Center Houston during your Texas visit. In Oklahoma, the most populated areas are around Tulsa and Oklahoma City, where you can visit the Oklahoma City Zoo. Lake Eufaula is the largest reservoir in Oklahoma and offers lots of recreational opportunities. In Kansas, explore the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve or a zoo or museum. The largest city in Kansas is Wichita. In addition to Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas has other natural areas and parks as well as caves and caverns to explore. Visit Louisiana for delicious traditional food and culture, swampland, and make sure to spend time in New Orleans, the jazz music capital of the United States, and explore the French Quarter there. In Mississippi, you can visit the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the Vicksburg National Military Park and the birthplace of Elvis Presley in Tupelo.

During these months, you can avoid extreme temperatures in the summer and the potential for harsh winters. The weather is mild and the nights are enjoyable, especially if you pack yourself a sweater to sit outside and enjoy the great outdoors.

A few of the other top attractions are the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas, Hot Springs National Park in Arkansa, the French Quarter in New Orleans, and Gulf Islands National Seashore in Mississippi.
The South has plenty of outdoor adventure. A few of the top outdoor activities are hiking, biking, white water rafting, rock climbing, camping, and stargazing.
Some of the top places to go hiking and camping in this region are the Appalachian Trail, Devil's Den State Park, Big Bend National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and Tishomingo State Park. If you're interested in seeing the Milky Way, Big Bend National Park is also a great place to go for stargazing.
If you're looking to get off your feet and get in the water, the South Region has several places to go whitewater rafting. Some of the top places are Big Bend National Park, Nantahala River, Upper Salt River Canyon, and Chattooga River.

Big Bend National Park has over 800,000 acres of mountains and desert. Mountain biking, birding, fishing, nature watching, camping, backpacking, and you-name-it can be done in Big Bend.
The Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in Texas, and it home to The Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The park was established in 1972, and is a sanctuary of preservation. It's best known for its fossilized reef mountains, Capitan Reef. This park is a must-visit destination for hikers and campers, with more than 80 miles of trails.
Hot Springs National Park, located in Arkansas, is home to scenic drives, 26 miles of hiking trails, and abundant creeks.
Travel to the South Region and you'll be met with state parks full of mountains, gorges, beaches, rivers, hiking trails, campgrounds, and more. Whether you want mountain views, awe-inspiring canyons, or stunning waterfalls, there's a state park in the South for you.
The most popular state parks in this region are Devil's Den State Park, Lake Thunderbird State Park, Tishomingo State Park, Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Wilson State Park, Chicot State Park, and Petit Jean State Park. Each park offers an almost completely different experience, so they are definitely worth visiting.
States in the Southern U.S. have some of the best dishes throughout the country. Many southern food dishes have origins in African-American culture, like soul food, cajun food and creole food. A lot of popular southern dishes have been adopted by people worldwide. Some of these popular dishes are fried chicken, biscuits, hush puppies, banana pudding, and chicken pot pie.
There are so many popular restaurants in the South, from casual dining to fine dining to roadside dining. A few of the top restaurants are Jones Bar-B-Q, Hays House 1857 Restaurant and Tavern, The French Press, Parrain's Seafood Restaurant, Delta Bistro, Odd Duck, Stanley's Famous Pit BBQ, and Cattlemen's Cafe.
Most of the campgrounds in the South Region offer year-round options or have very long camping season. Since this region has three national parks, there are so many outdoor activities to experience. Temperatures can be pretty extreme during the summer, so if you plan to visit during the summer months it will take some additional planning to make sure you have everything you need for the perfect camping trip. During the winter, temperatures are very mild, making it a perfect destination to travel to get away from the cold winters in other regions. Some of the best place to go camping while in the South are Big Bend National Park, Devil's Den State Park, Hot Springs National Park, and Lake Thunderbird State Park.
