Altitude Acclimatization
Did you know that, at 10,000 feet above sea level, oxygen availability is approximately 30% less than at sea level? At 14,000 feet, it is roughly 43% lower! As we ascend in elevation, our bodies must adjust to these lower oxygen levels by increasing red blood cell production, breathing depth, and heart rate. This acclimatization period takes an average of 1-4 days, but can take weeks for some people. Situated at 7,544 ft in elevation, the Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes KOA is the perfect spot to relax and let your body adjust to the higher altitude.

We want our 4-legged guests to enjoy their time at the campground as much as their humans do. Our KampK9® dog park is the perfect spot to let your pup off the leash. They can run free and socialize with other dogs, ensuring they get a good night’s sleep too! New this year - a long dog run, for the pups that would rather chase balls than romp in KampK9®.

Fuel Your Body for the Day’s Adventures
DJ’s Kitchen is our on-site eatery, located in the main building. Start your day off with a hearty breakfast burrito or a Hunt Brothers Pizza breakfast pizza. After a day exploring the Great Sand Dunes, refuel with a loaded baked potato, pizza, or wing bites. **Gluten-free options available**

We Love Our Dark Skies!
Did you know that dark skies provide a variety of benefits to humans, wildlife, and our ecosystem? For humans, it regulates our circadian rhythms and provides deeper, more restorative sleep. Dark skies also enhance the stargazing experience. Studies indicate that the sense of awe and wonder we feel when stargazing leads to reduced stress and anxiety and increased happiness.

Be sure to visit our stargazing deck during your stay at the Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes KOA. Located at the back of the park, the deck offers a quiet retreat for those awe-inspiring moments. Don’t forget to ask the front office staff about our binocular rentals.
