Alamosa / Great Sand Dunes KOA Journey Recreation

Welcome to the Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes KOA! Our goal is to ensure you have everything you need during your stay with us. DJs Kitchen is open daily, serving Hunt Brothers Pizza, wing bites, and breakfast burritos (gluten-free options available). Our Camp Store carries all of the camping and RV essentials, along with an array of fun souvenirs to commemorate your stay.

This Kampgrounds of America is located in Alamosa, just a short drive from the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Centrally located in the San Luis Valley, the campground is a perfect home base for exploring all that Southern Colorado has to offer. If you prefer to stick close to home, there’s plenty of on-site recreation to keep the entire family occupied. Here are the top recreational activities to enjoy during your stay with us.

1. Biking and Walking

If you’re traveling with children, our pedal kart rentals are a must-do activity. The pedal karts are available in multiple sizes, ensuring no one in the family is left out. We even have tandem karts for guests who prefer to partner up for the adventure. So, grab your travel buddies and head out onto the pedal kart course for some fun and a little friendly competition. If you’re looking for a more leisurely walk or bike ride, check out our walking trail. Located at the back of the park, the trail is a great way to take in those mountain views. We highly recommend a sunset walk!

2. Swimming Pool

With over 300 days of sunshine annually, our swimming pool is the ideal spot to relax and soak up those rays. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the solar-heated pool has become a gathering place for friends and families.

3. Pet-Friendly Activities

The Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes KOA offers a pet-friendly camping experience. In addition to providing lodging that allows pets, the park has plenty of space for your furry friends to run off that extra energy. They can romp with other dogs in our KampK9® dog park, hike the nature trail, or chase balls in our new big dog run, ensuring even your 4-legged family members will sleep well each night. The city of Alamosa also has several outdoor parks you can visit with your pooch outside of the campground.

4. Kid's Activities

Your kids won’t have time to be bored during your stay at Alamosa KOA Journey®. They can climb and swing on the playground, swim in our heated pool, and race on the pedal kart course. Our outdoor recreation area also includes a basketball hoop court, hula hoops, a volleyball/badminton court, cornhole, horseshoes, and several interactive games.

Stargazing!

Stargazing!

We highly recommend venturing out after dark at least one night during your stay with us. Colorado's big open sky, combined with low light pollution, makes our campground a magnificent place to stargaze. To enhance your experience, we've installed a stargazing deck in the back of the park. The deck offers a comfortable place to lie down and enjoy the Milky Way. So, grab a sleeping bag and experience the magic! How many shooting stars can you count? Stop by the front office to grab a constellation map and find out if an interpretive astronomy event is scheduled during your stay.

Sandboard & Sandsled Rentals

Sandboard & Sandsled Rentals

No trip to the San Luis Valley is complete without a stop at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. And there's no better way to experience the Dunes than on a sandboard or sandsled! Our sandboard/sled rentals are the cheapest in the Valley (no deposit required). **Rentals for registered guests only.**

Annual Chili Cook-off

Annual Chili Cook-off

The Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes staff isn't just committed to helping your family make lasting memories. We work hard throughout the season to raise money for Care Camps Foundation.

Our largest fundraising event is the annual Chili Cook-off, known as the Battle of the Bowls. In 2025, we added a salsa category, making it our biggest and best cook-off yet. Want to help us make 2026 even bigger? Contact the office to learn how to enter your chili or salsa, or to become a taster. Help us bring laughter and joy to children battling cancer!

Care Camps is a non-profit organization that collaborates with physicians and vendors to send children with cancer to summer camp.

Pancake Breakfast

Pancake Breakfast

Sundays are our staff's favorite day of the week! It's an opportunity for us to serve you and get to know each of our guests personally. Our famous pancake breakfast is available every Sunday, during peak season, from 7:30 am to 9:30 am. Breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, and coffee (gluten-free waffles available upon request). So, put on some loose pants and listen for Les' breakfast bell.

**All proceeds go to Care Camps Foundation, which sends children with cancer to summer camp.**

Due to the Valley's wide-open terrain, it's often windy at the campground. That makes it the ideal place to fly a kite! Forgot your kite at home? No problem - we have a variety of kites available for purchase in our Camp Store.
