Explore Mitchell's Top Attractions
The World's Only Corn Palace
No visit to Mitchell is complete without seeing the World's Only Corn Palace. Established in 1892 and at its current location since 1921, this one-of-a-kind attraction features stunning murals created from thousands of bushels of corn, grasses, and grains. Redesigned every year, it celebrates South Dakota's agricultural heritage and is featured in 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die. During the summer months, visitors can also enjoy complimentary guided tours while learning how the famous murals are created.
Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village
Step into history at the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village, the only active archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. During the summer excavation season, visitors can observe archaeologists uncovering a 1,000-year-old Native American settlement while exploring museum exhibits, artifacts, reconstructed dwellings, and interactive displays overlooking scenic Lake Mitchell.
Family-Friendly Activities
Mitchell offers something for everyone, including an indoor recreation center, an outdoor aquatic center during the summer months, and the Dakota Discovery Museum, where exhibits highlight Plains Indian culture, the Fur Trade, Dakota Territory, railroading, farming, ranching, and life during the Great Depression, along with rotating exhibits featuring regional artists.
Cabela's World's Foremost Outfitter
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate that Cabela's World's Foremost Outfitter is conveniently located just minutes away off I-90 at Exit 332, offering everything needed for hunting, fishing, camping, and outdoor adventures.
Explore Laura Ingalls Wilder's De Smet
Only about 40 minutes from Mitchell, the historic town of De Smet invites visitors to step into the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
