Mac was “born” in 1984, the brainchild of former tourism supporters from the city. His main job was to lure visitors into the city and his duties pretty much remain the same today.
Mac was constructed by Saskatoon artist, Don Foulds using a steel frame, covered with metal mesh and completed with 4 coats of cement.
A contest was held to name the moose and the winner was Mac, after late city alderman and moose booster, Les MacKenzie.
Mac remains one of the most photographed roadside attractions in Canada.
You can find Mac the Moose at Tourism Moose Jaw located on the corner of Thatcher Drive E and Highway #1. Come take your picture with our 32 foot Moose!

We now have nearly 50 display buildings, and numerous storage buildings, which represent the early settlers, the coming of the railway, the building of grain elevators and the development of pioneer towns. In 1977, the Sukanen Ship was dedicated and became the focal point of our museum, so our name was changed to reflect this unique and fascinating part of Saskatchewan's history. Many more milestones have followed, including the rescuing of the Diefenbaker homestead from an uncertain fate, acquiring Bill Young's extensive Allis Chalmers and Case IH collection which is housed in two 50ft x 96ft display buildings, and preserving the 100 year old grain elevator from Mawer, Saskatchewan. The number of artifacts in our collection is difficult to accurately determine but it must exceed 100,000 including the indoor display of over 50 cars and trucks, more than 140 tractors, as well as 43 pieces of machinery, horse-drawn equipment and snowmobiles.

The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (SBOIC) was created to help promote the conservation of the endangered Burrowing Owl and their prairie habitat through education, stewardship and eco-tourism. The Centre opened its gates to the public for the first time in the spring of 1997.
The building site, located on the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds, was chosen because several pairs of burrowing owls typically nested in the infield of the racetrack!
In the beginning, SBOIC consisted of a small interpretive centre that showcased pictures and displays, and was staffed by a single person. Visitors used spotting scopes from an observation blind to view the wild owls nesting in the infield of the racetrack. Over the years the Centre has expanded to include a gift store, a larger display area, and a traveling educational program “Owls on Tour”. The Centre is also the permanent home to a small captive population of owls.

When artist, Yvette Moore purchased the former Land Titles Office to house her growing art career, and collection she saw an opportunity to collaborate the talents of herself but also create a destination for other artisans to display their works on a year round showcase.
In a time when Tourism was starting to take flight in Moose Jaw with the successful construction of the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa and the Tunnels of Moose Jaw, the city became a destination hot spot for not only the Saskatchewan market, but also neighbouring provinces and states. The quaint charm and historic beauty of the downtown core, along with a host of other intriguing attractions continues today to make Moose Jaw a place that makes people want to come back to time after time.
