Rock N Bowl

Rock N Bowl

Rock N Bowl is a live music venue located in New Orleans. It is a unique venue that combines a bowling alley and a music club, together in one place. The club features various live music of local musicians, and is also famous for booking many zydeco acts. In 1941, the bowling alley opened on the upstairs floor of a small commercial mall building in Mid-City New Orleans, under the name of "Mid City Lanes." John Blancher, the current owner, purchased it in 1988 and a year later turned it into a live music venue, while keeping the bowling alley active. The first live music at the venue was performed on November 2, 1989, by Johnny J and the Hitmen.[1] Following the change, the place became known as the Rock 'n' Bowl, however, the original name "Mid City Lanes" has also been in use, and was still often found under that name alphabetically in music listings. (wikipedia)

Here you can bowl, order a drink or New Orleans foods, listen to the live music or dance the night away, all in one place! It is such a unique place that you must experience!!!

Lafreniere Park

Lafreniere Park

Lafreniere Park is only a few miles from our campground.  It is a great, 155 acre natural space. It hosts famous annual 4th of July & Christmas events! Read about it here.

"Lafreniere Park is the largest park in Metairie.

The park features extensive array of wildlife, including a wide variety of birds, squirrels. turtles, rabbits, raccoons, opossums and nutria. Commonly seen species are White Ibis, (Canadian, African, and Chinese) Geese, Black Swan, Black-bellied Whistling Duck, and Great Egret. They are easy to photograph from a distance of about 20 to 30 feet. One side of the park contains a marshland with a wooden walkway cutting through it, allowing travelers to get up close with the wildlife. Two large playgrounds provide a fenced-in area for small children to play, complete with benches and covered tables for their parents. The park is also home to a carousel. In the middle of the park is a man-made lagoon, with three islands. Pavilion Island is near the center, and contains a large pavilion. Marsh Island is home to much of the park's wildlife and features a boardwalk. Large man-made hills blanket some fields, while leaving others open for various activities, such as disc golf. The largest of these hills, located on the north side of the park near the concert pavilion, is colloquially referred to by locals as Coon Hill, due to the large population of raccoons present in the park. A two-mile walking and jogging track encircles the park, with three stretching gyms located at intervals around it.A 5-acre dog park is located in the northeast of the park, with separate fenced areas for small and large dogs.

The park contains an array of sports fields and other multi-purpose fields. One side of the park was converted into a frisbee golf course. The park has hosted the Allstate Sugar Bowl High School Lacrosse Classic. It also hosts other sports events. Lafreniere is also a popular place for joggers because of the two mile walking track, which is strictly a pedestrian track. Although the track is for joggers, the park also recognizes the needs for skaters and bicyclists. Many steps and concrete rails are scattered throughout the park, making these spots ideal places for skateboarders. For bikers and light traffic, the park contains a large road mirroring the inside of the walking track, which is kept smooth and level.

The park is decorated every December with elaborate light displays, which can be viewed on foot or (for a fee) by vehicle. During the event, children's craft activities are provided near the Pavilion Island parking lots, and local school bands perform on stage." ~per wikipedia

Rivertown

Rivertown

*A few blocks up the street from our park!

~In 1682, the French explorer Lasalle first landed here & claimed the Louisiana Territory & Mississippi River basin for France.
~The pier here was damaged in Hurricane Katrina but will reopen in 2027 & serve as a river cruise pier.
~On Lundi Gras (day before Mardi Gras) we have "The Meeting of the Courts" for the Krewes of Argus & Zulu. The pier was used for the arrival of the Carnival royalty by boat, until it was damaged, bringing the boat arrival to an end. The tradition will be revived with its repair! The rest of the festival still happens here each year!
~At the bottom of the levee is a statue that marks the 1st bare knuckle boxing match held right here, in 1870. It was the 1st World Championship Heavyweight Prize Fight in the US.

This area is PACKED with much more history, with buildings as old as the 1820s.

The park area is a replica of olden days, with a vintage packing shed, icehouse, grocery store, outdoor pizza oven, gas station & a replica of St. Mary's Church (Kenner's first Catholic Church).

Rivertown boasts a Theatre, Planetarium, pottery shops, restaurants, boutique, “Coffee Trolley” (a coffee shop housed in a trolley) & even a Space Station!

It's Space Station has a full sized NASA International Space Station prototype. It's 1 of only 2 in existence today. You can explore spin-off technology with a Space Robot, touch the 4 billion year old Gibeon Meteorite & take a walk through the history timeline of the 20th century.

Rivertown was designated as a USA Main Street in 2014.

If you want to spend a day close to our park, then head to quaint Rivertown! Start out with brunch at Debbie on the Levee & try the Doberge cake. Hit up the Coffee Trolley. Take a walk on top of the levee & watch the ships ferry back & forth. Go to the Theatre or Planetarium & catch a play or Laser Light show & stop in & explore the Space Station. Pop into one of the pottery shops to paint some pottery. Head to one of the restaurants for lunch. The Rivershack has New Orleans food & the Ground Pati has burgers & massive stuffed baked potatoes (try the Briskett one)! Both of them have outdoor yard games & live music on the weekends! Make sure to stop in to Flying Dolly's Ice Cream Shop for a New Orleans stuffed snowball (try Creole Cream Cheese). This wraps a perfect day, without having to venture far!

If you are here for any festivals, the street gets shut down for a block party. If you come in May, there's Movies & Music in the Park. Hang out for live music or an outdoor movie on a big screen!

If you come in Dec., Rivertown is transformed into a "Magical Christmas Village".

Each Dec., the streets & buildings are adorned with dazzling lights & displays. On the weekends, shop local foods & crafts, take a photo with Santa, watch a song/dance performance, revel in the sudsy "snow" that blankets the park or catch a holiday themed musical laser light show at the Planetarium.
