The refuge is located on the north shore of Lake Marion. In the winter months one can see ducks and geese. It is also a nesting and stopover area for migratory birds, raptors, shore birds, and wading birds. The endangered American alligator and the wood stork can also be seen. There is a Visitor Center with educational exhibits, walking trails, a car tour route, wildlife observation and photography, hunting, and fishing.

Congaree National Park has the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern United States. Waters from the Congaree and Wateree Rivers sweep through the floodplain, carrying nutrients and sediments that nourish and rejuvenate this ecosystem and support the growth of national and state-champion trees.
